Two Holland College roofs now have solar panels thanks to a partnership with RBC and RBC Foundation, which helps reduce energy costs for the College.

Through RBC’s Community Solar Program, the College has installed solar panels on the roof of the Prince of Wales Campus in Charlottetown and the Atlantic Police Academy in Summerside. Together, the installations have a capacity of 226.1 megawatt-hours, which will significantly reduce the college’s energy costs.

Holland College President & CEO, Natalie Mitton says the project demonstrates how thoughtful collaboration can have a meaningful impact.

“The solar installations here at the Prince of Wales campus and at our Atlantic Police Academy in Summerside are expected to generate meaningful energy savings for the College. At a time when energy costs continue to rise, generating more of our own energy will give us greater flexibility to direct resources toward what matters most: our students and the training initiatives that support our workforce and our province.”

The Community Solar Program was launched by RBC in September. Under the agreement, RBC will purchase renewable energy credits from Holland College over a 10-year period, helping RBC offset its operational emissions while supporting community organizations across Canada. RBC Foundation also provided capital funding to support the installation.

“By collaborating with community organizations which are investing in community solar, we’re creating a model that aims to deliver real, tangible benefits to the communities we serve while rethinking how we can source local solar energy,” said Jon Douglas, Head of Climate Operations RBC.

Environmental responsibility and corporate innovation are two of Holland College’s guiding pillars. The Community Solar Program puts both into practice, showing how a partnership can bring renewable energy to campus and help manage costs for years to come.
