Free English classes funded by the Government of Canada.

LINC offers English language classes for newcomers living in Prince Edward Island. Classes help you improve your language skills for daily life, work and communication in Canada.

LINC Overview


  • Who can take LINC classes?

    To be eligible for government-funded language training, you must be

    • A permanent resident of Canada or a refugee/protected person whose application for permanent resident status is being processed and has been informed by IRCC of the initial approval, subject to assessment

    • At least 18 years of age or older. 

    You cannot be a Canadian citizen or a temporary resident (international student, worker or visitor). 

    Cost: Free (fully-funded by the Government of Canada through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada)

  • We work with the Immigrant and Refugee Services Association to help determine your current English language level. 

    Based on the results of the CLBPA, you will be placed on a waiting list to attend classes at your assessed English level.

    Please note: A $50 fee applies if you need to retake your CBLPA or if you do not have permanent resident status. 

    • Full-time day classes are 25 hours a week from Monday to Friday.
    • Part-time day classes are 15 hours a week from Monday to Friday. 
    • Part-time evening classes are 6 hours a week, two days a week from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
    • Classes are also available online. 
  • Holland College uses the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) to assess your language level.

    Canadian Language Benchmarks are a national standard and are based on reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

    They are used across Canada to place adult learners in English classes.  You can learn more about CLB and your English level by visiting the CLB website for Language Learners.

General English Language Training

Improve your English language skills to help with settlement in Canada.
We offer Canadian Language Benchmark(CLB) levels literacy(0)-4.

  • Reading, writing, listening and speaking in English
  • Useful and practical topics such as housing, banking, medical, employment and transportation
  • Making new friends from many different countries
  • Understanding Canadian culture, norms and practices
  • Confidence in expressing yourself and interacting with others

You will be placed in the appropriate language class after you complete your registration and language test with IRSA.

English Language Training
- Hospitality

Practice your English while learning valuable workplace skills!

The Employment Language Training (ELT) Hospitality program helps you improve your English language proficiency while practicing customer service and communication skills to help prepare you for work in the tourism industry on PEI.

Who can apply? 

New immigrants who have an English Level of CLB 4 or higher can apply for the ELT-hospitality program.

When can I start taking ELT-Hospitality Classes?

This program is delivered in-person during the day. It is a full-time class of 25 hours per week, Monday to Friday. You must interview for the program and commit to attending from September to June.

You will improve your reading, writing, listening and speaking in English and practice your language skills through hands-on experiences such as:

  • server training at our food-service events
  • customer service practice in our New-to-You Shop,
  • event planning for our student events (Winter Carnival, Halloween Haunted House, and Pancake Day)
  • Bus tours to familiarize you with PEI's attractions
  • a two-week job shadow placement

You will also learn about the Employment Standards Act, the Human Rights Act and participate in résumé and cover letter writing workshops to help you prepare for the workforce.

Will I gain any special certificates or credentials?

When you complete the program, you will receive:

  • EMERIT National Tourism Skills (certificate)
  • Canadian Workplace Essentials (curriculum)
  • PEI Best Service Training Program (certificate)
  • Food Safety (certificate)
  • WHIMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) (certificate)
  • Standard First Aid and CPR/AED Training (2 certificates)

Support for Families & Children


On-site childcare

Care for Newcomer Children (CNC) is an on-site childcare centre providing high-quality childcare for your children while you attend your language class.

Our qualified Early Childhood Educators (ECE's) care for children 19 months to 5 years old, while parents are in class. Activities support early childhood development and english language learning through singing and dancing, arts and crafts, reading stories and playing games in the yard. 

Available for newcomer children age 19 months to 5 years old.

 

Summer day camp

Our Summer day camps help you continue your english classes while your children are on summer break from school. Summer day camps are available to children age 5 - 12 while you are attending your LINC classes.

Our day camp is led by qualified Early Childhood Educators who will match activities to the age of your child. Activities may include games, sports, music, crafts and trips to the park.
