Information for new students
Welcome, and congratulations on your acceptance into the Resident Care Worker program at the Prince of Wales Campus.
You are about to begin a very exciting and busy new chapter of your life! The information provided here is intended to help you prepare for the upcoming semester. Please read through it carefully, and contact us if you have any questions.

Textbook requirements will be discussed in orientation.
Uniforms, shoes, and other items for clinical courses in Semester II will be discussed during orientation. Items should not be purchased prior to starting the program.
Students will require an electronic device to access the student management system (SAM). A laptop/Ipad is highly recommended for students.
Clinical and practicum placements may occur at various locations across Prince Edward Island and, as resident care work is practiced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you may be scheduled to attend clinical or practicum shifts early mornings, days, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays. All clinical and practicum costs are the responsibility of the student and there are no guarantees students will be placed at a preferred location or with a preferred shift schedule.
Transportation to and from clinical sites is the responsibility of the student and public transit may not align with clinical shifts or location schedules.
In preparation for the responsibilities and demands associated with the role of the RCW in the health care field, students must demonstrate the same level of commitment and responsibility to the program as would be expected in the workplace.
It is an expectation in public and private facilities that all health care workers demonstrate a high level of accountability regarding attendance in the workplace. This means attendance in all program activities (classroom/lab/clinical) is required.
The Resident Care Worker (RCW) program is intensive, challenging, and rewarding. The student learns theory and hands-on skills, developed in the simulated laboratory setting, prior to going into the clinical setting. The overall purpose of the RCW program is to prepare the graduate with the skills and knowledge required to provide quality care to clients in a variety of health care facilities. The student gains an appreciation for the role of the RCW in long term care and acute care with observational experiences in mental health care. The student also gains insight into how they can meet physical, psychological, social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs of the client and their family. A range of interpersonal, communication, and personal care skills are required to fulfill this role.
