Program-Specific Information

The Primary Care Paramedicine program prepares graduates to function as essential members of Canada’s evolving healthcare system, delivering patient-centered care across a broad range of prehospital and community settings. Upon completion, learners will demonstrate a strong foundation in human anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology as it relates to acute and chronic medical conditions, traumatic injury, and complex patient presentations.

Graduates will be equipped to conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including detailed history taking and physical examination, formulate clinical impressions, and implement evidence-informed care plans within their scope of practice. Emphasis is placed on clinical decision-making, patient safety, health promotion, and the delivery of compassionate, culturally competent care. Learners will also develop strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams, while maintaining accurate and professional clinical documentation.

In addition to core clinical competencies, the program fosters the development of professional judgment, adaptability, and resilience required to practice in dynamic and unpredictable environments. Students will build the interpersonal and leadership skills necessary to work effectively in diverse settings, including emergency response, interfacility transport, and emerging community paramedicine models.

Paramedics must maintain a high level of physical and psychological readiness to meet the demands of practice. The program includes successful completion of the Paramedic Physical Abilities Test (PPAT), as well as structured opportunities to develop strategies that support mental health and professional well-being.

Experiential learning is a key component of the program. Students will complete one clinical practicum and two ambulance-based practicum rotations across a variety of healthcare environments. Placement opportunities may occur in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, or Newfoundland and Labrador. While efforts are made to accommodate preferences, placement locations are based on availability and may require travel and relocation. Associated costs—including travel, accommodations, and required equipment—are the responsibility of the student.
