Program Key Dates:

Orientation for first-year Practical Nursing students will take place on Tuesday, September 8th at 9:00 a.m. in Room 242E (First-Year PN Classroom).

Please ensure you allow extra time for parking and for locating your classroom. Orientation will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. Theory classes will begin on Wednesday, September 9th.

At this time, there are no additional program-specific dates to note.

Required Books

Students are required to purchase the bundled textbook package for NURS 1000, NURS 1010, and NURS 1020 through the Holland College Bookstore.

This bundle is a required program resource and includes:

  • Required textbooks for all three courses
  • Essential online learning resources and access codes
  • A discounted package price compared to purchasing the materials separately


Please note that these resources will be used throughout the entire two-year Practical Nursing program and are not limited to first-semester courses. Students are strongly advised not to purchase these textbooks or access codes individually from other sources, as doing so may result in higher costs and/or missing required online components.

Required Materials & Tools

We will discuss equipment requirements during the first week of the program. You can anticipate requiring the following:
  • Stethoscope
  • Penlight
  • Adult size sphygmomanometer (Blood Pressure Cuff)
  • Navy scrubs, white leather shoes, and a white lab coat. These items will not be required until second semester, and we advise you to wait to purchase these at a later date.

Required Technology

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE BLENDED LEARNING REQUIREMENTS

The PN program has some course activities that are completed online. College computer labs are available. These are general requirements for students to participate in blended courses.
 
1. A desktop or laptop Either a Windows-based PC with Windows 10 or a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or higher. Processor: Intel i3 minimum with i5 or higher recommended. RAM: 4 Gb minimum with 8Gb or higher recommended. Storage: 10 Gb storage minimum with SSD disk recommended. Regarding storage – some programs may have higher storage requirements.

2. Speakers/headphones/earbuds with microphone for listening to audio or videos presented in courses. Note: your laptop may have a built-in microphone and speakers, but we recommend an external set for best quality of experience during synchronous activities.

3. A built-in or external webcam for interacting in course activities that require video feedback from students.

4. Google Chrome is the only browser that SAM (the college’s learning management system) supports completely.

5. Microsoft Office 365. Students have free access to install the suite on their computers, tablets or other mobile devices. A browser-based version is available.

6. Adobe Reader

7. An Internet connection with a minimum download speed of 10Mb/s and an upload speed of 1Mb/s is recommended. A wired connection to your home router is typically preferable to a wireless connection as it provides better stability and performance.

8. Tablets, smart phones, and Chromebooks may allow you to access some course content but have limited functionality. For more information or help with this, email sam@hollandcollege.com
 

Your First Day

  • Date: Tuesday, September 8, 2026
  • Time: Students should arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 8:55 a.m. to ensure they are settled and on time for a prompt 9:00 a.m. start
  • Location: Room 242E, Charlottetown Centre, Prince of Wales Campus
  • What should I bring? Students are asked to bring a writing utensil and a notepad for taking notes on the first day.

Finding Room 242E:

Enter through the main entrance of the Charlottetown Centre (the building that houses the library). Once inside, you will see a large staircase. Take the stairs to the top floor. At the top of the stairs, turn left and follow the hallway. You will come to a beige ramp. At the bottom of the ramp, turn right. Continue down the hallway; the classroom will be located at the end of the hall on the right-hand side. It will be marked with a sign for the Practical Nursing program.

Program-Specific Information

Students are required to have up-to-date immunizations and TB testing prior to participation in clinical/practicum placements. Students will not be permitted to attend clinical/practicum settings without the required documentation, which will prevent completion of program requirements. 

Please ensure you have completed and submitted the Immunization Verification Form for Holland College Healthcare Programs to the Admissions Office, as this is an admission requirement. It is recommended that students begin this process as early as possible to ensure all requirements are met prior to program start. 

Before attending any practicum or clinical portions of the program, a student must submit a criminal record check and a vulnerable sector check. If the check indicates that a record exists, the student may not be able to complete portions of their program that are required for graduation. Any associated costs are the responsibility of the student. 

A Message from the Program

Welcome and congratulations on your acceptance into the Practical Nursing Program at the Prince of Wales Campus (Charlottetown) of Holland College! You are about to begin an exciting and challenging new chapter. Our Mission Statement is: To prepare practical nurses, grounded in the principles of primary health care, to be effective professionals within a multidisciplinary health care team.

The Practical Nursing program prepares graduates for a rewarding but demanding profession that requires a high level of commitment, personal integrity, professionalism, maturity, a strong work ethic, and effective interpersonal skills. Because of the nature of this field, the program is delivered at a rigorous pace and requires significant dedication from students. Success in the program depends on strong time management and study skills. Students are expected to arrive prepared for class and lab, having completed assigned readings or viewed required materials in advance. In addition to scheduled classes, several hours of independent study and preparation are required each day. As a result, maintaining a healthy balance with extracurricular activities and part-time employment can be challenging. We look forward to meeting you in September!
