Required Books

You will need your books on day 2. We use the Individual Learning Modules (ILM's) that some of you are familiar with from some high school carpentry programs. You will be able to purchase those at our Summerside Waterfront Campus bookstore one week before school starts. The ILM's will be approx $300. The computer code will be approx $100, and a math booklet approx $20.

Required Materials & Tools

You will not be required to have your tools or safety gear the first week. Feel free to wait for our advice in week one on what to buy if you don't already have your tools. Many vendors, such as Kent Building Supply, will offer you a student discount. I suggest talking to a contractor sales rep to receive the discount (e.g, Tracy at Kent in Summerside)

Your First Day

• What should I bring? Pen and notebook

There will be approx 48 students in the program that will be broken into 4 groups after the first couple of weeks. You will be in that group for the house build. We are excited to be building four houses @ 26' x 44' for the province again this year.

• Hammer: 20 oz Estwing and Stanley are good (14 -15 oz if dewalt, stelleto or similar titanium. Regular handle length and smooth face recommended)

• Tape: Imperial measuring tape. Min 25’ long and 1” wide

• Pencils: Carpenter’s pencil and Standard pencils

• Nail Pouch: Leather or Canvas (suspenders are nice for cold weather)

• Speed Square: Metal (recommended) or Plastic

• Foot Safety: 6” to 8” Boots with green and orange tags (CSA approved)

• Eye Safety: CSA approved Glasses/Goggles (both clear and tinted recommended)

• Ear Safety Protection: reuseable or disposable plugs

• Coveralls: Bib recommended (you can wear pants/jacket if preferred. Prep for cold weather)

• Hard Hat: Type 2 CSA approved (generally type 2 will have foam inside for side impact)

• Utility Knife: Olfa ¾” or 1” or similar

• Nail Puller: Cat’s paw or pry bar style

• Chalk Line: Minimum 50’ long

• Snips: Aviation (Red or yellow for right handers, Green or yellow for left handers)

• Nail Set: Set of 2 or 3 with different size tips ideal

• Driver Bit Set: Phillips; Robertson #1 & #2 (impact driver)

• Locker Protection: 2 x Padlock or combination (you will have 2 lockers available)
