Camp Gencheff runs a weekend respite program for kids, teens, and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities, about three weekends a month from September to June. We're looking for a cook who can make genuinely good, scratch-cooked, home-style food for 20-30 campers and staff, and who's comfortable adapting it on the fly for allergies, sensory needs, and dietary restrictions.
This isn't cooking for an anonymous table number. You'll get to know who you're feeding, and why the details matter to them.
What you'll do:
- Plan and cook home-style meals from scratch (roasted chicken, stews, shepherd's pie, pasta, pancakes, fresh baking) for 20-30 people
- Shop for groceries and manage food purchases within a set budget
- Adapt meals for celiac/gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian/vegan, halal, allergies, and sensory/texture needs, while keeping cross-contamination protocols tight
- Handle last-minute changes and special requests without losing your footing
- Manage inventory, storage, and food waste
- Keep the kitchen clean, organized, and food-safe
- Involve campers in cooking or baking when it's safe and appropriate
Pay is $350/week (approx. $17.50-$23/hr for 15-20 hours), above PEI minimum wage.
We're looking for someone who:
- Has solid scratch-cooking skills, whether from a kitchen job, camp, catering, or home cooking for a crowd (formal culinary training isn't required)
- Is comfortable adapting recipes on the fly rather than working from a fixed menu
- Has basic food safety knowledge; a Food Handler's Certificate is required (or must be obtained within an agreed timeframe)
- Brings patience and creativity around dietary needs, allergies, and sensory preferences
- Is comfortable working around people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities
- Can work independently but communicates well with the respite team
Requirements:
- Food Handler's Certificate (required, or obtained within an agreed timeframe)
- Vulnerable Sector Check (required as a condition of employment)
- Able to stand/walk for extended periods, lift and carry groceries and kitchen equipment, and work safely around heat; reasonable accommodations considered
- Available for weekend shifts roughly 3 weekends a month, September to June
