Job Description

The City of Summerside is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented student to join our Municipal Services Department as a Summer Engineering Student. This position provides engineering and technical support for electric utility and infrastructure projects, with a focus on data management, system development, and asset documentation. The successful candidate will work closely with engineering staff and contribute to initiatives such as Heat For Less Now (HFLN), gaining valuable, hands-on experience in a municipal electric utility environment.

Reporting to: Smart Grid Engineer

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the Heat For Less Now (HFLN) database using SQL
  • Support the creation of dashboards for data entry, tracking, and reporting
  • Collect, organize, and analyze data related to utility assets and infrastructure condition 
  • Assist with the digitization and management of engineering and maintenance records
  • Provide technical and administrative support to the engineering team as required


Qualifications

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary program in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Experience with SQL or database development is considered an asset
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools or SCADA systems (e.g., Ignition) is an asset
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team • Bilingualism is considered an asset

This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
