This course is intended to help you prepare for the SM3 Transport Canada exam. The SM3 exam is three hours and consists of 10 essay-style questions worth approximately 10 marks each. The questions will cover a broad range of knowledge of ship’s business, international laws, Agreements, and Conventions, Canadian Legislation and Regulations, and Master’s responsibility in different events.
During your exam, you will be provided with a laptop that contains all of the open book publications in PDFs. It is important that you familiarize yourself with these publications so that you know where to find information during the exam. There may be questions that pertain to information that is not found within the publications. We recommend that you spend a minimum of four weeks preparing for this exam.
This is a Chief Mate and Masters-level exam and there is a higher level of expectation that you should show depth of knowledge in your answers; therefore, your answers should be detailed, well-written and concise, and should quote the regulations whenever possible.
