COM1 – Communications Level 1

This course is intended to prepare the student for the Transport Canada COM1 exam. This exam is multiple choice and consists of two parts:

  • Part 1 (one hour) is open book using the following publications: International Code of Signals, Radio Aids to Marine Navigation, and Annual Notices to Mariners.
  • Part 2 (one hour) is not open book – the student must be able to identify all of the signal flags and must know the meaning of the single-letter signals, as well as all of the distress signals.

Knowledge of Morse code is no longer required as part of the Communications syllabus.

During Part 1 of your exam, you will be provided with a laptop that contains all of the open book publications in PDFs.  We recommend that you spend a minimum of 5 days preparing for this exam.
