Attributes of a Professional Firefighter

Being a professional firefighter requires much more than just an understanding of how to do the job. Each situation a firefighter encounters is unique, and they must draw upon their inner resources when they face challenging and dangerous situations.

In addition to meeting the program’s admission requirements, applicants to the Professional Firefighter program should be able to:

  • Read and correctly interpret complex technical information
  • Listen carefully and understand spoken communications
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Comply with orders given by their commanding officer
  • Work effectively in confined spaces and in high places
  • Work cooperatively as part of a team
  • Work in physically and psychologically uncomfortable situations, and be able to help others while doing so
  • Quickly assess uncertain situations and make sound decisions based on the evidence
  • Function calmly and effectively in stressful situations
  • Feel empathy for others
  • Respect other people’s cultures and backgrounds
  • Deal with other people respectfully, honestly, and ethically
  • Adapt to change and remain current in all certifications and training
