Basketball ‘Canes add 6’2” center from Kosovo to roster

Ergita Dema, a 6’2” center from Peja, Kosovo, is the latest recruit to the Holland Hurricanes women’s basketball team.

In the past, Dema has suited up for PENZA (Russia), winning the state championship three times.  She also was a member of the Kosovo national team at the U16, U18 and U20 levels, competing in five European championships along the way.  She also competed in the International School Sport Federation (ISF) World Championships at the high school level.

“I decided to commit to Holland College because it gives you the opportunity to study as well as play basketball,” she shared.  “I am enrolling in the Sport and Recreation Management program and look forward to working with my instructors.  Basketball is very important to me. Coming from oversees basketball, I wanted to choose the college I would attend wisely. I felt the Hurricanes were the right team for me to join, I believe it will be an amazing experience.”

Dema is described as a strong mid-range shooter and shot-blocker.  She handles the ball well and is a strong three-point shooter with character and leadership skills.

“We are excited to add Ergita to our program next year,” shared head coach, Chris Connolly.  “She is a versatile forward that can impact the game on both ends of the floor.  Her shot blocking and rebounding ability will be a big part of what we do moving forward.  We look forward to welcoming Ergita to the Hurricanes.”

The ‘Canes have won the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) conference championship in 2015, 2016 and 2017, and were medalists in the 2015 and 2016 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national championships.  The team has been improving rapidly as they look to return to championship contention.  After struggling in 2019, the ‘Canes bounced back with a stronger season in 2020.  The 2020-2021 season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
