This course is intended to help you prepare for the SM4 Transport Canada exam. The SM4 exam is three hours and generally consists of five to ten essay-style/calculation questions worth 10 to 20 marks each. The exam questions will cover a broad range of knowledge of ship’s business, international laws, Agreements, and Conventions, Canadian Legislation and Regulations, and in particular, the Carriage of Goods by Sea.
During your exam, you will be provided with a laptop that contains all of the open book publications in PDFs. It is important that you familiarize yourself with these publications so that you know where to find information during the exam. There may be questions that pertain to information that is not found within the publications. We recommend that you spend a minimum of four weeks preparing for this exam.
This is a Master Mariner’s exam and there is a higher level of expectation that you should show depth of knowledge in your answers; therefore, your answers should be detailed, well-written and concise, and should refer to the acts and regulations whenever possible.
