Ray Murphy Receives National Leadership Award

Ray Murphy accepts his award from CICan and partners.Holland College is proud to recognize Ray Murphy, instructor in the Construction Electrical program, who has received a Bronze Leadership Excellence Award for Faculty from Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan).

The award is one of the organization’s most prestigious national honours, recognizing leadership, innovation and impact across Canada’s public college and institute system.

Murphy was recognized for his commitment to student success, program growth and community service during the annual CICan Connections Conference held in April in Ottawa.

An instructor with the Construction Electrical program since 2007, Murphy has helped establish the program’s reputation as a highly respected training pathway for aspiring electricians and electrical apprentices.

His commitment to meeting his students’ needs sets his leadership apart and underscores his educational style.  His student-centred approach emphasizes meeting each student as an individual with unique goals, while finding opportunities to inspire them to exceed their own expectations.

“Ray continually searches for ways to enrich the student experience, and he truly leads by example” said Craig Roche, program manager for Industrial Technology and Trades. “His generosity extends from his students to his community and leaves a positive impact on the lives of everyone he reaches.

Murphy is known as a positive and dependable team member whose enthusiasm for teaching and learning inspires colleagues and students alike.

“Ray is an exceptional educator who brings passion and pride to his work.” said Holland College President & CEO, Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald. “Whether he’s challenging students to reach beyond academic outcomes, or he’s helping to support new faculty— his engagement and positivity drive us to do better. He is a former recipient of our College’s Teaching Excellence Award, and we’re delighted to see Ray recognized on a national level for the incredible contributions he’s made to our College and our community.”

In addition to his work at Holland College, Murphy volunteers as a firefighter and first responder and is actively involved with Skills Canada, serving as an organizer for the provincial competition and as a member of the national technical committee.

Holland College is honoured to see Murphy’s work and dedication recognized on a national stage.
