Photography and Digital Imaging student Maggie Facey received professional accolades for the second time this year when the Professional Photographers Association of Canada awarded her the prize for Best Student Portrait at their national convention in Halifax earlier this month.
The second year student, who hails from Twillingate, Newfoundland, said that she was as surprised when her work was named Best Student Portrait as she was when she won the distinction of being the Maritime Professional Photographers' choice for Student Photographer of the Year a few months ago.
"Our instructor encourages us to participate in these kinds of competitions, but I really didn't expect to win," she said.
Facey's photograph was of her friend, Brandon Gillis. The national award is presented for the portrait that presents an individual or couple in such a way as to reflect the personality of the subject, and also illustrates the personality, artistry, originality, creativity and technical skills of the photographer.
Photography and Digital Imaging instructor Alex Murchison said he is thrilled with Facey's accomplishments.
"We have always been very proud of Maggie. She is an excellent student whose dedication to photography is evident in her work," he said.
"It's a privilege to work with so many talented students. Just to have one's print accepted into the general show is quite a feat. Maggie had a second print selected, and another second year student, Chris MacIsaac also had a print in the show."
Students from the Photography and Digital Imaging program raised money to pay for the trip through a variety of program-related activities including print sales, portrait and pet photography. In total, 20 students attended the conference with Murchison and his assistant, Jean-Sebastian Duchesne.
"It was a very worthwhile trip," Murchison said. "There were many activities and seminars to choose from, and the students had the opportunity to network with professionals from across Canada. Our students represented the college well, and made a very positive impression."
