Hurricanes set to host national meeting

The Holland Hurricanes varsity program is proud to welcome delegates from across the country next week to the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association annual general meeting. The CCAA encompasses 106 members spanning from Vancouver Island to Prince Edward Island. The five regional conferences and national executive will be attending as well as individual sport convenors, sponsors, and government representatives. The week long gathering will be centered in downtown Charlottetown and participants will be treated to many of the city's and Island's outstanding tourism options including the college's own Culinary Institute of Canada at the Tourism and Culinary Centre. Moreover, the event will provide an opportunity to feature the capacity and hospitality the college and the province offers as a national championship site.

Albert Roche, Manager of Student Services and Athletics at Holland College and Atlantic conference representative, is excited to bring the group to PEI.

"This event will be a unique chance to showcase what is happening with our College, our sports program and illustrate the desire we have to continue growing our identity on the national sports scene. This group makes the decisions on bids for championship sites as well as other initiatives where we want PEI to be a first option as a possible destination."

The Holland Hurricanes have already hosted the national college golf championships in 2008 and many Atlantic College Athletic Association championships in their short history as members for only four full years. Of note, Holland College is one of only five schools in the country with teams in every CCAA sport leading to a national championship. With new facilities coming into play for the college in 2011 the capability to host has certainly expanded.

Roche adds this event doesn't happen without the support of provincial and local contributions.

"The CCAA is extremely impressed with the partners who have stepped up to help make this event a reality. In particular we want to recognize the Province of PEI and the City of Charlottetown who helped bring this group to PEI and their involvement clearly indicates the value they place on sport tourism in our province."
