Well known Island philanthropists Regis and Joan Duffy have a history of giving generously to an array of causes in their community. Their investments in Holland College and its students include annual support for student awards, and gifts to numerous projects and initiatives, including the Florence Simmons Performance Hall and the revitalization of The Culinary Institute of Canada. The Regis & Joan Duffy Library at the Prince of Wales Campus was proudly named in appreciation of their generosity in 2019. Recently, they made a $60,000 gift to the Holland College Foundation’s Thrive campaign - a $2.5 million fundraising effort to establish a centre for student wellness, resilience, and success at Holland College.
The centre will offer a broad, integrated suite of services including mental health supports, a health clinic, academic support services, and career and academic counselling. Lifelong determinants of health such as sleep, diet, exercise, and social interaction will also be emphasized. Satellite offerings will ensure all students have access to resources, regardless of their location.
“Joan and I agree that physical and mental health is a significant component of success, whether that be academically, professionally, or personally,” said Regis Duffy. “Many Islanders are facing challenges accessing healthcare, including students. We’re proud to be a part of this initiative because we want to bring some peace of mind to students, to let them know we care about their health and wellness, and we want to support them while they pursue their education.”
Dr. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald, Holland College President, expressed gratitude for the Duffys’ support.
“Regis and Joan are leaders in our community and have generously supported Holland College and its students through numerous initiatives over the last 15 years,” said MacDonald. “This gift will go a long way in ensuring students maximize their intellectual potential, make a successful transition to the workforce, and contribute to the overall success of our communities.”
