Students looking to earn a Human Services diploma at Holland College will soon be able to take the program on the West Prince Campus in Alberton.
Students in the Human Services Program learn about various intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities and obtain practical skills to help people with disabilities to achieve their full potential.
“Local NGOs in West Prince and government contacted us expressing their concern over the shortage of Human Services workers in the region,” said Holland College vice president academic, Natalie Mitton. “We are happy to respond and help address this shortage by offering the course in Alberton and at the same time provide students with more options to study and work.”
The program is currently offered on Holland College’s Prince of Wales Campus in Charlottetown and will expand to the West Prince Campus in January 2020.
“I encourage the future graduates of this program to continue to work in Prince County and support organizations like Community Connections and Community Inclusions, who have played a vital role in advocating for this program. We are very pleased to partner with Holland College to bring the Human Services program to West Prince.” - Minister of Social Development and Housing, Ernie Hudson
“Recognizing that there is a labour shortage of skilled workers in the area of Human Services, I hope this will result in increased numbers of graduates who wish to work in the field,” said Minister of Education and Lifelong Learning, Brad Trivers. “Those interested in the program should apply as soon as possible to ensure they can secure a seat and have time to apply for any funding for which they may be eligible.”
The Human Services Program expansion is funded in equal parts by the Department of Social Development and Housing and the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning.
