Holland College music course open to public

Holland College will offer the popular evening course How to License Your Music in Films, Television, and Video Games in January. This course is open to the public.

Instructor Craig Dodge will introduce musicians, songwriters, and their agents to the lucrative world of music licensing. The intensive course will show participants how to generate more revenue from original songs and compositions. Participants will learn about music formats for various media, how to compose in the various styles to maximize placement opportunities, the function of licensing agreements, where and how to pitch their music, and how to maximize their studio time to create marketable versions of their material.

As a part of the course, industry professionals from different parts of the world Skype into class to provide career advice, speak about their experiences in the music business, and to answer students’ questions. These people include music publishers, artists, songwriters, and composers.

“Many musicians aren’t aware of the opportunities that are available to get their music licenced,” Dodge says. “You don’t have to live in New York or London to sell your music in markets all over the world, you can do it from right here.”

A graduate of UPEI and the Berklee School of Music, Dodge’s music is currently heard in over 100 films and television shows airing daily in over 110 countries worldwide. He has placements on National Geographic, A&E Television, History Television, BBC, Barclay’s Premier League, New York Knicks/MSG Basketball, National Football League, National Hockey League, CTV/Bell Media, Fox, NBC, CNN, Six Flags, MTV, KAO/Jergens Skin Care Products, and Discovery Channel. He has also composed music for over 35 video games.

The course, which costs $383 plus HST, will run on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. January 16 to April 6, 2017.
