A group of 53 newly arrived immigrant and refugee children spent an afternoon in the Oral Health class at Holland College’s Dental Assisting program to find out more about oral health in a fun and interactive workshop.
Brad Murray of the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada said the children were able to learn in a way that was fun and engaging.
“Many of these children have not had access to these type of health services for the past couple of years so our staff are busy getting them caught up. The visit gave the children an opportunity to learn the importance of taking care of their teeth and about good nutrition. We also visited the college’s dental clinic, which allowed them to see what a dental office looks like and the instruments that are used to help keep your teeth healthy,” Mr. Murray said.
Dental Assisting instructor Wanda MacInnis said the Dental Assisting program enjoyed hosting the children.
“Our students were thrilled to interact with the children one on one to show them the equipment in a dental office, and to make them feel comfortable and welcome,” she said. “It was a truly enriching experience, and we all had some very teachable moments. The students worked very hard to make this project a success. We hope to continue to partner with Newcomers to Canada in the future.”
