Holland College’s Green Machine will host its third annual Earth Day barbecue on Tuesday, April 22 from noon to 1 p.m. This year, the event will take place in two locations, in the quadrangle of the Prince of Wales Campus in Charlottetown and at the Summerside Waterfront Campus.
In partnership with the Electronic Product Recycling Association and the Island Waste Management Corporation, the Green Machine will be accepting end of life electronics at both locations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Bluefield Natural Meats and Hot 105.5 are also sponsors of the event. Culinary Arts students will be preparing the food for the barbecue using organic meat.
The winner of the Green Machine’s Mug Shots campaign will be announced at the barbecue. Students, staff, and members of the community were encouraged to post pictures in which they are holding their refillable water bottles or coffee mugs. Weekly prizes have been awarded, and a $500 cash prize will be awarded to an eligible Holland College student. Students from the Energy Systems Engineering Technology program will be on hand with various projects related to energy efficiency.
Joan Diamond, the Green Machine’s spokesperson, said the group hopes that this year will build on the success of the past two years.
“This event gives people in the area an opportunity to drop by the college, enjoy a complimentary lunch, and mingle with students and staff,” she said. “There’s always a wonderful atmosphere at the barbecue, and this year, with some of our Music Performance students busking, it promises to be even better. We strongly encourage people to stop by over the lunch hour.”
