SoPA students present spring showcase

Students from Holland College’s School of Performing Arts (SoPA), a partnership with Confederation Centre of the Arts, will present their second annual spring showcase at The Mack April 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m.

The students, who are enrolled in the one year Performing Arts Foundation, two year Music Performance and two year Dance Performance programs, will present band ensembles, songs, dance, and theatrical sketches. Last year’s sold-out showcase drew rave reviews from the audience; this year’s event promises to be just as engaging.

“The Student Showcase is a fantastic way to feature the talents of the School of Performing Arts students and highlight the results of their hard work all year. The Music Performance students will get the opportunity to perform the different music styles they’ve learned and played in their classes this semester. The students will perform R&B, pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz and Latin tunes,” said Music Performance instructor Alan Dowling.

Peggy Reddin, Director of Arts Education at Confederation Centre and SoPA Instructor said preparing their pieces for the showcase has been a stimulating experience for the students.

“In the Performing Arts Foundation and Dance Performance programs we’ve focused on telling our own stories, on being genuine in our performance, so it’s really exciting to see the students responding to that in their material, and even creating their own works,” she said.
