Scholarship commemorates local businessman

The Holland College Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Connolly Financial Group Lock Llewellyn Memorial Scholarships, which will be presented to two Holland College students annually.

The $500 scholarships will be awarded to students who best combine academic and athletic abilities, Maria Driscoll, Executive Director of the Holland College Foundation, explained.

"We are delighted that the Connolly Financial Group has chosen to honour Mr. Llewellyn in this manner," she said. "Scholarships such as this not only commemorate an individual, they provide assistance and encouragement to deserving students."

Lock Llewellyn served as the sales and service representative to Island lawyers through the Canadian Bar Insurance Association for close to a quarter century to the time of his death last year. Connolly Financial Group, who is the current authorized representatives for the Canadian Bar Insurance Association Plan, chose scholarship criteria that would acknowledge his professional and personal interests, said Steve Connolly, President of Connolly Financial Group.

"Lock took care of the CBIA plan for many years, providing a vital service to lawyers across the province. He was also an avid curler, representing P.E.I. at the national level several times. We chose to incorporate his high professional standards and his love of sports into the criteria for this award to fully honour his contribution to the Island."

The Holland College Foundation enhances the continuing development of the college by providing funds for scholarships, bursaries, research and special projects. The foundation is responsible for soliciting, receiving and recording monetary gifts and gifts-in-kind from businesses, foundations, and individual donors.
