Responding to a growing demand by the Tourism and Hospitality industry for people with broader education and work experiences, the Atlantic Tourism and Hospitality Institute, an affiliate of Holland College, will be offering an International Tourism and Hospitality Management (Post-Diploma) program, including an international study experience in Chile, commencing this October.
"We want to be seen as a Canadian leader," said Albert Roche, Programs Manager for the Atlantic Tourism and Hospitality Institute. "We want to bring our students to the world and become known as a truly international tourism and hospitality school. Our industry and education partners in Chile share our perspective on the benefits of international experiences and exposure for students."
Students will begin the program mid-October at the Atlantic Tourism and Hospitality Institute, taking such courses as Financial Management, Marketing and Sales Management, Consumer Behaviour, Advertising, Adventure Tourism, International Cultures and Spanish (Level I & II). In February the students will travel to Chile to commence an eight-week international study experience. They will begin taking courses at the Universidad de la Frontera, in the Pucon region, and will continue on to take the remainder of the courses at the Universidad del Mar in the Vina del Mar/Valparaiso region. During the eight weeks, students will combine their study of local History and Geography, as well as Ethno-Tourism and Eco-Tourism, with cultural tours and experiences.
In the Pucon region of Chile, an area of huge lakes, wide rivers, and natural geysers, students will enhance their studies with hands-on experience in Adventure-Tourism. This includes activities such as white water rafting/kayaking, repelling down waterfalls, and hiking to the top of a volcano. In the Vina del Mar region, the nightlife, beaches, water sports, and historic architecture will provide a change of pace from a student's studies. At the end of their eight weeks, the students return to ATHI to complete a summary report related to their studies and experiences abroad.
Applicants to the International Tourism and Hospitality Management (Post-Diploma) program must have graduated from a two-year Tourism, Hospitality, or Recreational Related Program, or from a University Degree Program with related credits. Career opportunities for graduates include Food and Beverage Management, Human Resource Management, Restaurant Management, Tour Guide Professional, Adventure Tourism Management, Tourism Information Centre Management, or Entrepreneur.
