Salary: $22.87 - $24.81 per hour (Level 8 UPSE)
Hours Per Week: 37.5 hours weekly (May to October) - days/evenings & weekends as required

Job Description

Reporting to the Site Manager, the purpose of this position is to manage all aspects of the living historical farm and blacksmith shop located at Orwell Corner Historical Village. In addition to caring for animals and overseeing the planting and harvesting of crops, this position is also expected to provide third-person interpretation of Orwell for visitors. This interpretation includes the sharing the history of the site as well as agricultural history and knowledge.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assessing the needs of all farm animals including chickens, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, cows and cattle; - Cleaning pens and providing feed and water;
  • Identifying and addressing medical needs of animals including breeding and castrating;
  • Training horses as needed, hitching horses to various implements and guiding horses as they plow fields or pull visitors on carriage rides;
  • Making parts for machinery and other items in the blacksmith shop;
  • Repairing fencing, digging post holes and building repairs such as shingling, sills, carrying beams, flooring, windows and doors;
  • Winterizing barns and machinery;
  • Planning feed requirements for winter months and arranging obtainment and storage of feed;
  • Deciding on and arranging sale of surplus animals;
  • Sowing and harvesting crops such as grains and potatoes;
  • Leading or participating in Orwell programming focused on the farm, animals and blacksmith shop; and - Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or GED
  • Extensive experience working with and using horses
  • Experience in agriculture and farming practices
  • Experience of animal husbandry
  • Experience in working independently with little guidance
  • Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organization skills
  • Knowledge of Farm and Agricultural health and safety procedures and regulations
  • Access to reliable transportation.

Other Qualifications:

  • Experience with blacksmithing processes is an asset
  • Experience with cash handling procedures and working in a museum setting or heritage interpretation is an asset
  • Bilingualism is an asset
