Job Description

The Industrial Electrical Technician position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City’s power plant engines and auxiliary equipment. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, installing new equipment, re-arranging machinery, operating engines, alternators, switchboard and auxiliary power plant equipment, including various control systems, pumps, fuel systems, water and steam systems. Responsibilities also include carrying out regular maintenance and keeping electrical instruments, equipment, and machinery in good working condition and repair.

Reporting to: Electrical Operations Supervisor

Key Responsibilities:

  • Test demand and energy meters, install new equipment, trouble shoot and repair power and control circuits, electrical instruments and meters, rotating machinery, substation equipment, protective relays, lighting, and electronic equipment.
  • Train in-house to attain Power Plant Operator qualifications.
  • Follow health and safety policies and complete safety documentation.
  • Prepare written reports, sketches, and work from technical drawings and specifications.
  • Maintain a tidy and safe work area.
  • Stay current with new developments and techniques in the electrical field as it pertains to this work and participate in training programs as required.
  • Learn other job classifications within the Electrical Department as directed.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Valid Industrial Electrical Journeyman’s License (Province of PEI).
  • Valid Class 3A driver’s license.
  • Ability to install and maintain electrical equipment and instruments.
  • Strong trouble shooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of working on live circuits up to 5000 volts (and higher when de-energized).
  • Able to work independently and supervise others.
  • Physically fit, mentally alert, and of good character.
  • Knowledge of electricity generating plants and equipment would be considered an asset.
  • Bilingual skills would be considered an asset
