The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq Department of Community Services and Infrastructure Emergency Management Training and Engagement Coordinator About The CMM The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing the eight Mi’kmaq communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaq communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM’s Department of Community Services and Infrastructure (DCSI) is currently looking for a motivated and knowledgeable candidate to fill the role of Emergency Management Training and Engagement Coordinator. Position Overview Under the direction of the Senior Director of Community Services and Infrastructure, and reporting to the Emergency Management Project Manager, the Emergency Management Training and Engagement Coordinator is responsible for supporting communities in the coordination and delivery of emergency management-related training and engagement opportunities, based on community needs and priorities.

Overview of Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the delivery of training such as EOC, ICS, Chainsaw Safety and Tree Felling, Crisis Communications, Psychological First Aid, Train-the-trainer opportunities
  • Deliver Emergency Management-related information sessions to communities, in collaboration with Community Emergency Management Coordinators
  • Host bi-monthly meetings with Community Emergency Management Coordinators to identify gaps, needs, proposal/report supports, required training, etc.
  • Deliver youth engagement sessions in partnership with Community Emergency Management Coordinators
  • Provide administrative support to Everbridge Emergency Alert System Operators in communities
  • Support other departmental training initiatives such as Basic Home Maintenance sessions
  • Support the planning and facilitation of the Atlantic First Nations Emergency Management Training Program, i.e. hosting program information sessions, working with NSCC admissions office and communities to ensure application process is accessible and navigable, coordinating other logistics

Qualifications

Position Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education (bachelor’s degree or diploma) in Science or Management or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience in both areas of study
  • A minimum of one-year direct experience working in the emergency management, community planning, resource management, public health, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Experience working in or with First Nation communities
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with other departments, levels of government, industry, and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as leader on multi-discipline teams, or independently, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work in an environment requiring discretion and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access)
  • Ability to apply creativity and innovative thinking to community focused solutions.
  • Ability to think analytically and critically while problem solving to identify specific needs and potential solutions.
  • Ability to manage time and various activities effectively and efficiently while providing quality customer service.
  • Able to develop relationships and this will include strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, collaboration, conflict resolution, and active listening
  • Ability to coordinate many tasks, people, and competing priorities.
  • Travel within Nova Scotia will be required.
  • There is an occasional requirement to work outside of normal working hours due to the requirements of the member communities and clients.
  • Have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • If all qualifications are equal, preference will be given to persons of Aboriginal ancestry.
