Job Description
The primary focus of this position, under the supervision and guidance of the Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, and occasionally the Speech Language Pathologist, will be to provide therapy services to patients of Physical Medicine services based out of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Incumbent can expect coverage / rotation among all services (stroke care, acute care, provincial rehabilitation unit, orthopedics, and ambulatory services).
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Carrying out direct care activities;
- setting priorities and demonstrating flexibility and effective use of time in order to multitask between daily duties to meet the service requirements for multiple patients and often multiple therapists;
- supervising/instructing/assisting with patient programs as prescribed by a therapist, which may include: application of selected therapeutic activities/exercises, ADLs & functional mobility, use of aids & devices, and appropriate modalities;
- organizing and delivering group or individual activities as prescribed by a therapist;
- instructing developed exercise/activity classes;
- demonstrating awareness of safety issues related to patient, staff and caregivers;
- maintaining equipment and preparing treatment areas for patient use;
- maintaining an inventory of equipment, adaptive aids, wheelchairs, and supplies; identifying equipment that needs maintenance, repair, or replacement;
- monitoring treatment program and reporting observations related to assigned activities to the therapist, including patient comments, responses to intervention, and status during application of the intervention, etc.
- participating as a team member in patient care;
- demonstrating effective communication with the patient and their family and other health team members;
- documenting on electronic health record;
- contributing to data collection and workload measurement statistics;
- collecting client and service information;
- performing administrative and other related duties.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Diploma / Certificate from a recognized Rehabilitation Assistant or Physiotherapy Assistant and Occupational Therapy Assistant Program (that meets requirements for accredited programs with respect to clinical practicum hours for both OT and PT).
- Good interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated adaptability.
- Knowledge of supportive communication techniques is required
- Self-motivated with good organizational skills.
- Must be capable of sustained physical activity (including standing, walking, bending, stretching, lifting in order to assist patients who may have very limited physical capabilities).
- Must demonstrate adequate motor skills for implementation of therapeutic techniques and activities.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Applicants must have a good previous work and attendance record

- Relevant professional development activities will be considered an asset
- Recent experience working with inpatients in a hospital setting will be considered an asset
- Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset
- The successful applicant must provide a satisfactory criminal records check prior to beginning employment.
