The Agriculture Energy Systems Specialist is the Department lead on policy and program development related to energy systems in agriculture and provides advice and recommendations to Management and Senior Management, as well as to the industry and the public regarding energy production and use on farms. This specialist will serve as the Department liaison with key contacts and stakeholders in the provincial and federal government, industry, and academia. The Agriculture Energy Systems Specialist is responsible for the policy research, development and management of programs related to energy efficiency, renewable energy generation and innovative agriculture energy projects.

      Duties will include, but not limited to:

  • Apply project management skills in leading climate change and energy initiatives through development to implementation, including developing project charters, establishing project teams, overseeing resources and scheduling, and implementing and closing projects;
  • Develop comprehensive, sector-specific energy audit processes for PEI farms
  • Undertake sector-specific energy audits/assessments for agriculture sector; identifying, prioritizing and sequencing activities to optimize energy use and Return on Investment based on the farm’s specific context and goals, resulting in a detailed plan. Understand each farm’s unique challenges and opportunities with respect to energy systems.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to Island producers regarding equipment maintenance or modifications or management efficiencies to increase energy use efficiency
  • Provide technical advice on opportunities for fuel switching, switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Identify where fuel switching projects can decrease overall costs and GHG emissions.
  • Promote renewable energy systems within the agricultural community, including system design, estimation of energy generated, and calculation of return on investment timeframes. Provide technical advice on renewable energy generation.
  • Develop funding proposals and submissions to secure resources for agri-environmental program development and delivery.
  • Lead and manage program policy development, planning, organizing, budgeting, analyzing, promoting, auditing, reporting, and evaluation of agri-environmental programs related to agriculture energy systems;
  • Apply and maintain knowledge and expertise related to energy systems as it relates to agriculture; including knowledge and expertise related to on-farm renewable energy generation, strategies to increase energy use efficiency on-farm, and strategies for effective switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
  • Develop, maintain and facilitate working relationships and networks with other agencies and groups engaged in energy efficiency initiatives in Prince Edward Island and throughout Canada, including participation on Federal-Provincial-Territorial working groups and provincial technical working groups for energy projects, initiatives and policies as they relate to agriculture;
  • Develop, implement, coordinate, monitor, and/or evaluate departmental programming and initiatives related to agriculture and strategies to optimize energy use; aiming to address climate change through greenhouse gas mitigation and mitigate risks of increasing energy costs to farm profitability.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree (Masters of Science) in Engineering, Energy Engineering, Sustainable Energy Systems, or related field of study with Considerable experience in Energy Engineering, Energy System Design and Development, AND Climate Change Mitigation or Adaptation in Agriculture; or
  • Degree (Bachelors of Science) in Engineering, Energy Engineering, Sustainable Energy Systems, or related field of study with Extensive experience in Energy Engineering, Energy Systems designs and Development, AND Climate Change Mitigation or adaptation in Agriculture.
  • Considerable experience in project management involving a diverse set of partners and deliverables;
  • Considerable experience and understanding of agriculture industry;
  • Considerable experience in computer applications including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and those needed for energy audits and monitoring enterprise energy consumption.
  • Must have excellent skills in project management, communication, conflict resolution, organization and extension practices;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
