I grew up in a home where the news was always on. As a child, I was drawn to the reporters. Their passion, their courage to ask difficult questions and their ability to bring communities together. More than anything, I admired how they gave a voice to people who might otherwise go unheard. Over time, that early fascination grew into a calling: to communicate and to make meaningful change.
Today, I am in the third year of my articulated undergraduate degree, majoring in Journalism with a specialization in Law and Politics, and a minor in Psychology. The Holland College Degree Pathway has played a defining role in both my education and my future.
I began my studies at UPEI, focusing on theoretical courses such as philosophy, psychology, politics, law and writing. This foundation strengthened my academic skills, but my transition into the Journalism and Communications program at Holland College transformed how I learned. In my first year, I developed a strong understanding of journalism’s core values: ethics, law, storytelling and multimedia communication.
Now, in my final year at Holland College, our classroom reflects a real-world newsroom. We pitch our own ideas, produce written and multimedia stories, and work under professional deadlines. This experience has taught me independence, discipline and strong time-management skills, while building confidence to think critically and work proactively.
Beyond the classroom, I have had opportunities to apply these skills in meaningful ways. I currently work in communications for the Charlottetown Skating Club, where I produce press releases, social media content and long-form communications. Being able to give back to my community using the skills I’ve developed has been incredibly rewarding.
While journalism is my foundation, my long-term passion lies in law. Through my time at Holland College, I discovered how deeply connected journalism, politics and legal systems truly are. Over the past semester, I have regularly attended court to report on cases that interest me, gaining firsthand exposure to the legal world. With the support of my instructors, I have also secured a unique internship at a law firm, which is an opportunity that had not previously existed within the program. This placement will allow me to continue building my communication skills, gain valuable experience in a legal environment, and connect with professionals in the field.
I will return to UPEI in 2026-2027 for my final year to complete my degree. I plan to write the LSAT in June 2026 and begin law school in September 2027.
For as long as I can remember, I have felt a strong desire to advocate for others. To help people be heard and to create meaningful change. The Holland College Degree Pathway has given me the skills, confidence and opportunities to begin that journey. It has supported my goals, challenged me to grow and prepared me for the future I am working toward.
