Create a To-Do List

Look at what you need to accomplish for the day and create a realistic list of what you can manage. Prioritize tasks based on your due dates and deadlines.

The top items on your list should be to attend and participate in class, read your textbooks, and review your work daily. These small steps can go a long way toward improving your grades!

Remember - Anything you complete is a success - celebrate those wins!

Create a Study Space

Set up a dedicated learning environment for studying. By working in the same place repeatedly, you’ll establish a routine and prepare your brain to focus. Determine what type of setting will work best for you and make sure your study space has:

  • A high-speed internet connection.
  • The required books, materials, and software for the course.
  • Headphones for listening to lectures or discussions (especially important in shared spaces).

Stay Organized

Take a moment to organize your files and make note of deadlines. Knowing exactly where files, forms, syllabi, books, and assignments are will help to eliminate additional stress. Use a calendar and create lists of important dates and deadlines to keep on track - it will help, we promise!

Reach out for help if you are starting to feel overwhelmed.

Eliminate distractions

It’s easy to get lost in social media or Netflix for the day and this can quickly derail your studies.  Turn the TV off and shut off your notifications; quiet these distractions and set aside time to focus on your studies!

If this is something you struggle with, set timers to incorporate study breaks.

Reach out!

If you feel like you’re starting to fall behind it’s important to ask for help. Your instructors and peers may be able to you, and the Student Support Services team is here to help you, too.

Holland College has resources available to help you succeed. Connect with us and take advantage of everything available to you.

You’ll make it here, and we’re here to help!
