Hurricanes weekend roundup

A busy weekend for the Hurricanes featured basketball, volleyball and hockey regular season action. Here is your Monday recap of the weekend that was.

 

Women’s Basketball

Hurricanes 74, Crandall 70

The Hurricanes travelled to Moncton, New Brunswick on Friday to challenge the Crandall University Chargers in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) action.

An 18-8 lead for the ‘Canes after the opening quarter tightened to a 39-31 lead at halftime.  The Chargers continued to cut into the Hurricanes lead, trailing 57-53 after three with the Hurricanes outlasting Crandall in the fourth quarter to pick up the four-point victory.

Karla Benitez led the way for the Hurricanes with 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks. Lauren Armstrong recored a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds while also adding four assists and four steals. Sheleese Hoilett added 15 points and five rebounds with Lisa Bolander scoring 14 points in the win.

The ‘Canes move to 6-1 on the season with the win and are tied for first with the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics.

The ‘Canes return to action on Saturday, December 3 when they host MSVU in a battle for first place to wrap up the first-half of the season before the holiday break.

Men’s Basketball

Hurricanes 82, Crandall 74

Always a big game in the ACAA, the Hurricanes travelled to Moncton, New Brunswick on Friday to take on the Crandall Chargers.

The Hurricanes led 25-18 after the first with things tightening at the half, up 44-38.  The Chargers kept coming in the third, trailing 63-57 with the Hurricanes playing a solid fourth and earning the eight-point win.

Logan Rempel had 15 points, six rebounds, and two assists for the Hurricanes while Chris Cheatham had 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, and seven steals.  Jack MacAulay added 13 points, two rebounds, and four assists. Kyree Thompson recorded 13 points, eight rebounds, and two assists off the bench.

The ‘Canes are off to a 7-0 start on the season and sit atop the ACAA standings; they will wrap up the 2022 portion of their season this Saturday when they face the MSVU Mystics at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.

Women’s Volleyball

Sunday | Hurricanes 1, UNBSJ 3 - Set scores were 21-25, 11-25, 25-20, 25-27

The ‘Canes fell to the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves at the McMillan Centre on Saturday afternoon in four-sets.

Morgan White had a match-high 18 kills to lead the attack for Holland College with Charlotte Sweetapple adding six. White also led the way in digs with 11 and aces with five. Kyra Benson chipped in with eight digs with Jenna O’Neill recording six. Ella Hickey recorded 24 assists, four aces, and six digs in the loss.

With the loss, the ‘Canes fall to 4-3 on the season and are in the middle of the standings in a closely contested first-half of the season. The Hurricanes will wrap up their first half on Sunday, December 4 when they host MSVU at the McMillan Centre.

Men’s Volleyball

Saturday | Hurricanes 3, UNBSJ 0 - Set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 25-15.

The Hurricanes faced the UNBSJ Seawolves for the second straight match and continued to impress, winning in straight sets in front of their home fans at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.

Luke Hyde led the attack for Holland College with 13 kills with Cameron Calhoun adding nine and Chris Basilio recording seven. Carson Gray led the defensive effort with ten digs with Hyde adding seven and both Calhoun and Tyler McBride with six. Justin Rix had 29 assists and two aces in the win.

 

Sunday | Hurricanes 3, UNBSJ 0 - Set scores were 25-10, 25-21, 25-22.

Once again the Hurricanes came to play as they defeated the UNBSJ Seawolves in their final match before the holiday break; they were victorious in straight-sets.

Luke Hyde once again led the attack with ten kills with Cameron Calhoun adding nine.  Kiefer Sinclair had 18 assists with Justin Rix adding nine in the win.

Calhoun led the defensive effort with ten digs with Tyler McBride adding five and Hyde with four.

The ‘Canes are now 4-3 on the season as they head into the holiday break; they’re tied with the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies for second in the ACAA standings.

The ‘Canes will return to action on January 14 when they visit STU in a battle for second in the conference. The first home games after the break are January 21 and 22 against the Université de Sainte-Anne (USTA) Dragons.

Women’s Hockey

Saturday | Hurricanes 1, Acadia 1

The Hurricanes began their 2022-23 Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) regular season over the weekend in Charlottetown versus the Acadia University Axewomen at the Eastlink Centre.

On Saturday, Jessica Desautels scored on the breakaway to give the Hurricanes the 1-0 lead at 2:43 of the second period; a lead that held up until Acadia scored with 8:38 remaining in the game to tie things up.  The teams ended the night in a 1-1 tie.

 

Sunday | Hurricanes 1, Acadia 2

On Sunday, a Jacy McMillan goal at 3:57 of the first put the ‘Canes ahead once again, only for the Axewomen to tie things up 36-seconds into the second period.  Acadia would add the go-ahead goal 3:56 into the third period to go on and take the 2-1 victory.

The Hurricanes begin the ACHA regular season at 0-1-1 and sit in second in the standings, while Acadia is 3-0-1 and in first.

The ‘Canes will return to action this weekend when they visit the Cape Breton University (CBU) Capers (0-2-0) in Nova Scotia on Saturday and Sunday.
