The Hurricanes competed in the 2022 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) women’s rugby championship match on Saturday in Fredericton, New Brunswick versus the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds, while the men’s and women’s volleyball ‘Canes had four ACAA regular season matches across Nova Scotia and basketball swept their home openers on Friday in Charlottetown.
Women’s Rugby
An early lead and a solid first half saw the ‘Canes impressing in the ACAA Championship match on Saturday as UNB chased their seventh straight conference banner. The Reds led 17-12 at halftime.
UNB would eventually flex their muscles in the second half and pick up the victory, and the championship, 44-12.
Tori Hogan was the player of the match for the ‘Canes after a try and convert; Rachel MacKay also recorded a try in the match.
It was the first ACAA silver medal for the Hurricanes in team history.
Four Hurricanes players were recognized by the ACAA over the weekend, highlighted by Emily MacDonald being named the ACAA Rookie of the Year. Tori Hogan, Kathleen Curran and Madison Tingley were also recognized, all being named to the ACAA All-Conference team.

Women’s Basketball
Friday | Hurricanes 94, Mount Allison 70
In their 2022 home opener at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown, the Hurricanes came out strong versus the Mount Allison University Mounties. The ‘Canes led 22-15 after the first, 44-33 at the half and 77-49 after three, en route to the 24-point victory.
Lisa Bolander led the way for the Hurricanes with 30 points, hitting seven threes on the day. Karla Benitez was right behind with 28 points while also adding 11 rebounds, nine assists, four steals, and two blocks. Amy Plaggenhoef added 20 points in the win.
With the victory the Hurricanes improve to 2-1 on the season and are in a tie for first in the conference with the Mounties. Their next opponent is the Crandall Chargers (1-1) this Saturday at home at 6pm before hosting the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves (0-2) on Sunday at 2pm.

Men’s Basketball
Friday | Hurricanes 116, Mount Allison 103
The Hurricanes performed strongly in front of their home fans on Friday night at the McMillan Centre in their home opener, leading 27-12 after the first quarter, 58-40 at halftime, and 95-70 after three. They would hold on to the 13-point win at the end of regulation.
Jalen Menzies led the offense for Holland College with 25 points while also adding six rebounds, three assists, and six steals while Almin Dervisivic had 24 points, five rebounds, eight assists, and three steals. Jack MacAulay and Logan Rempel both had 21 points and eight rebounds in the win.
The Hurricanes, now 3-0 and leading the ACAA standings, will face the Crandall Chargers (1-0) this Saturday at 8pm at the McMillan Centre before welcoming the UNBSJ Seawolves (0-2) on Sunday at 4pm.

Men’s Volleyball
Saturday | Hurricanes 0, USTA 3 - Set scores, 23-25, 16-25, 19-25
The Hurricanes travelled to Church Point, Nova Scotia for back-to-back days of ACAA regular season matches versus the Université de Sainte-Anne (USTA) Dragons over the weekend. The weekend started out not the way the ‘Canes would have hoped on Saturday with the Dragons taking the victory in straight-sets.
Cameron Calhoun had 15 kills to lead the attack for the ‘Canes with Luke Hyde adding ten. Kiefer Sinclair had 30 assists and four digs in the loss. Calhoun and Tyler McBride both had seven digs.
Sunday | Hurricanes 2, USTA 3 – Set scores, 18-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-21, 8-15
The action continued on Sunday with the Hurricanes mounting a comeback after dropping the first two sets to the Dragons. Set wins of 25-12 and 25-21 for Holland College forced a fifth and deciding set, which was ultimately won by the Dragons, 15-8.
Statistically, Cameron Calhoun had 13 kills, five aces, and 11 digs with Luke Hyde adding 13 kills and 13 digs. Kiefer Sinclair added 35 assists and eight digs in the loss for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes fall to 1-3 on the season while the Dragons improve to 4-0 with the win. The ‘Canes return to action on November 19 when they travel to Saint John to face the UNBSJ Seawolves (0-3); their next home matches are on November 26 and 27, also versus UNBSJ.

Women’s Volleyball
Saturday | Hurricanes 3, USTA 1 - Set scores, 25-17, 25-20, 18-25, 25-16.
The Hurricanes picked up their third win of the season when they defeated the USTA Dragons in four-sets on Saturday in Nova Scotia.
Jenna O’Neill and Morgan White both had 11 kills in the match to lead the ‘Canes offense. White added 15 digs and six aces with Charlotte Sweetapple recording 14 digs and Kateia Barenaba finishing with ten digs and five aces. Ella Hickey had 21 assists along with four aces and eight digs.
Sunday | Hurricanes 2, UKC 3 - Set scores, 25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 21-25, 12-15
After going up 2-0 in the match, the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils stormed back to win three-straight sets and the match in five sets on Sunday evening in Halifax.
Morgan White led the ‘Canes offensively with four kills, also adding one assist, a service ace and a dig. Jenna O’Neill contributed four aces, a kill and a service ace. Mason Babey was credited with two service aces and a kill while Kateia Barenaba recorded two blocks and a kill in the loss.
The Hurricanes drop to 3-1 on the season and sit in first place in the standings. They return to action on November 12 when they visit the Mount Allison University Mounties (3-1); their next home match take place on November 20 when they host the Crandall University Chargers (1-2) in Charlottetown.
