‘Canes win key match, ready for busy weekend ahead

The Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) season continues to roll along for the Holland Hurricanes as the women’s volleyball team was in action in a key game on Wednesday night in Charlottetown.

The Hurricanes and Mount Allison University Mounties entered the game separated by only two-points at the top of the ACAA standings entering the match at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement (MCCE) in front of an excellent crowd.

The ‘Canes, ranked eighth in the country, would earn the important victory in five-sets, surviving a Mounties comeback in the match.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-15, 21-25, 23-25 and 15-12.

Sam Gerbig led the way on offense with 12 kills with Ava Beisal recording ten. Gerbig added four aces and eight digs while Beisal had 12 digs in the win.

Shayla Reding had 27 assists, four aces, and 13 digs with Jenna MacFarlane leading the way defensively with 21 digs while chipping in with five assists.

The ‘Canes move to 10-1 on the season and sit in first place in the conference with three games to play. The Mounties fall to 8-3 on the season and are tied for second with the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies and Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics.

The Hurricanes have little time to rest as they are back in action this weekend when they’re in New Brunswick to take on the STU Tommies (8-2) in Fredericton on Saturday at 6pm, and the Crandall Chargers (1-10) on Sunday at 6pm in Moncton. So far this season, the ‘Canes defeated the Tommies on November 7 and the Chargers on November 12, both in straight-sets.

The women’s volleyball Hurricanes final regular season home game takes place on Saturday, March 5 versus the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils at 2pm.  If the ‘Canes can hold on to first place in the standings, they’ll secure the home-court advantage in the playoffs for March 8 (quarter-finals), March 10 (semi-finals) and March 12 (finals) if they advance.

The Hurricanes are also the hosts of the 2022 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship, March 23-27 in Charlottetown.  The event features the top eight collegiate women’s volleyball teams from across Canada.  Tournament passes are now on sale at www.hollandhurricanes.com.

On Friday, the basketball ‘Canes are in Sackville, New Brunswick to take on the Mount Allison University Mounties at 6pm and 8pm (women/men).

The women’s basketball Hurricanes enter the game tied with the Mounties at 6-3 for third in the conference.  This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season.

In this week’s CCAA National Rankings, the women’s basketball Hurricanes were included at the 15th position.

The men’s basketball Hurricanes, ranked third nationally, enter Friday at 9-0 and lead the ACAA standings.  They’re taking on the 5-4 Mounties, who are currently in third.

The basketball ‘Canes final regular season home games takes place on Thursday, March 3 when they face the Mounties once again, this time at the MCCE at 6pm and 8pm (women/men). Depending on where the Hurricanes finish in the regular season standings, playoff home games could take place on March 9 (quarter-finals), March 11 (semi-finals) and March 13 (finals) if the ‘Canes advance.
