‘Canes perfect on court over weekend

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams went undefeated over the weekend in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season play.

 

Men’s Volleyball

Saturday | Hurricanes 3, UNBSJ 1 - Set scores were 25-12, 25-20, 22-25 and 26-24.

The Hurricanes travelled to Saint John, New Brunswick on Saturday afternoon for a match with the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves.

Cameron Calhoun led the way offensively for the Hurricanes with 12 kills, an assist, and a service ace, while Luke Hyde recorded 11 kills, ten assists, three blocks, a service ace, and a dig.  Kiefer Sinclair recorded 60 assists, a kill and three blocks in the win.

The ‘Canes improve to 2-3 on the season and sit in third place in the conference while UNBSJ falls to 0-4 and is fourth.  The Hurricanes will play two-more against the Seawolves ahead of the holiday break when they host UNBSJ on November 26 and 27 at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.

Women’s Volleyball

Sunday | Hurricanes 3, Crandall 1 - Set scores were 25-14, 22-25, 26-24 and 25-18.

Having lost two in-a-row, the Hurricanes were determined to rebound with a win on Sunday afternoon at home versus the Crandall University Chargers.

Jenna O’Neill had a match-high 17 kills to lead the attack for the ‘Canes with Charlotte Sweetapple and Morgan White both adding seven. O’Neill and Sam Richardson both had ten digs to lead the defensive effort. Ella Hickey recorded 31 assists, six aces, and eight digs in the win.

The ‘Canes improve to 4-2 on the season and are tied for third with the University of King’s College (UKC), just two points behind Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) and Mount Allison University who share the top-spot. The Chargers fall to 1-6 and sit in ninth.

The ‘Canes will be back in action next Sunday, November 27 when they host UNBSJ at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.

Women’s Basketball

Sunday | Hurricanes 95, UNBSJ 41

The basketball ‘Canes travelled to Saint John, NB on Sunday afternoon for their second matchup with the UNBSJ Seawolves this season.

An explosive first quarter had the ‘Canes run away with a 22-2 lead before leading 47-18 at the half.  A 71-36 lead entering the final quarter grew to a 54-point victory for the Hurricanes.

Lisa Bolander led all scorers with 28 points in the game for the Hurricanes while Sheleese Hoilet had a 12-point, ten rebound double-double and Lauren Armstrong came close to a triple-double with 11 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. Amy Plaggenhoef had 15 points with Karla Benitez adding 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists in the win.

The ‘Canes move to 5-1 on the season and lead the ACAA standings ahead of both MSVU and the St. Thomas University (STU) who are 4-1 and two points back. UNBSJ falls to 0-5 and sits in a tie for sixth.

The Hurricanes return to action on Friday when they hit the road to take on Crandall at 6pm in Moncton, New Brunswick; their next home game is scheduled for Saturday, December 3 versus MSVU at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.

Men’s Basketball

Sunday | Hurricanes 102, UNBSJ 72

The Hurricanes put their perfect record on the line versus the UNBSJ Seawolves on Sunday afternoon in Saint John, New Brunswick as the fourth ranked team in Canada continued to sit atop the ACAA conference standings.

The ‘Canes led 25-18 after the first quarter, 56-41 at the half, and 84-54 after three.  They would play the Seawolves evenly in the fourth, securing the 30-point victory.

Jalen Menzies and Logan Rempel both had 17 points to lead the scoring for the ‘Canes. Jack MacAulay had 13 points, seven rebounds, and six assists with Kyree Thompson recording 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench in the win. Chris Cheatham added 11 points, three rebounds, and four assists. 

The ‘Canes are off to a 6-0 start on the season and continue to lead the ACAA standings while UNBSJ falls to 0-5 and in a tie for sixth.

The Hurricanes return to action on Friday when they travel to Moncton, NB to take on the Crandall Chargers at 8pm; their next home game is set for December 3 versus the MSVU Mystics at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.
