The Holland Hurricanes volleyball and basketball teams returned to the court this weekend for Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season action; it was the first time in over two months that the Hurricanes played ACAA regular season games. The women’s volleyball team picked up a win on Saturday versus the University of New Brunswick (UNBSJ) Seawolves while the men fell in their return to the court against the Université de Sainte-Anne (USTA) Dragons. On Sunday the men’s and women’s basketball teams each claimed a victory over the Crandall University Chargers.
There is little time to rest for the ‘Canes as the women’s volleyball team are back in action on Wednesday at home versus the Mount Allison University Mounties. This is a battle for first place in the ACAA standings as the ‘Canes sit at 9-1 and the Mounties are in second at 8-2. First-serve is at 7pm at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement (MCCE) with Holland College students receiving free admission by presenting your Holl Pass at the main entrance.
WVBALL – Hurricanes 3, UNBSJ Seawolves 1 (Saturday, February 19, 2022)
With set scores of 18-25, 25-15, 25-10 and 25-22, the Holland Hurricanes returned to competition with a comeback victory on Saturday afternoon.
Ava Beisal led the attack with 13 kills with Morgan White adding 11 and Kateia Barenaba recording nine.
Shayla Reding had a match-high 35 digs while Jenna MacFarlane led the defense with 20 digs. Beisal added ten digs and Reding had nine.
The Hurricanes recorded 22 service aces led by White with six, Sam Gerbig with five, and Beisal with four.
The ‘Canes move to 9-1 on the season and lead the ACAA while the Seawolves fall to 4-8 and sit in seventh place.
Wednesday’s home game versus Mount Allison will be the second time the ‘Canes and Mounties have met this season. The Hurricanes won on November 3 in four-sets in Sackville, NB.

MVBALL – Hurricanes 1, USTA Dragons 3 (Saturday, February 19, 2022)
With set scores of 25-17, 24-26, 25-21 and 26-24, the Hurricanes fell to the USTA Dragons on Saturday at the MCCE in Charlottetown.
Luke Hyde had 26 of the ‘Canes 42 kills to lead all players in the match. Nathan Baker added six with Zach Morris recording five.
Joey Horne dished out 36 assists while Hyde and Baker led the defensive effort with ten digs each.
The ‘Canes fall to 2-6 on the season and are tied for third in the conference while the Dragons move to 5-3 and sit in second.
The ‘Canes are back in action next weekend when they travel to Fredericton, New Brunswick to take on the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies. Game times are set for 2pm on Saturday and 12pm on Sunday.

WBBALL - Hurricanes 89, Crandall Chargers 54 (Sunday, February 20, 2022)
The Hurricanes jumped came out strong and took a 23-11 lead after the first quarter in their return to action on Sunday in Charlottetown.
The ‘Canes would blow it open in the second quarter and lead 51-21 at the half, eventually increasing their lead by five points in the second half.
Lisa Bolander led all scorers with 23 points while adding six assists and four rebounds.
Grace Bennett had 17 points and seven rebounds with Kassandra Little coming off the bench to add 11 points and seven rebounds.
Karla Benitez chipped in with ten points, five assists, and four steals.
With the victory, the ‘Canes move to 6-3 this season and are tied for third with the Mounties in a highly competitive ACAA. The Chargers falls to 1-9 and sit in sixth place.
The next game for the Hurricanes is next Friday when they travel to Sackville, New Brunswick to take on the Mounties at 6pm in a battle for third in the conference.

MBBALL - Hurricanes 111, Crandall Chargers 90 (Sunday, February 20, 2022)
The Hurricanes and Chargers both had their offenses come to play in their return to regular season action on Sunday. Both teams lit up the scoreboard with the ‘Canes holding a slim 30-26 lead after the opening frame. The ‘Canes would start pulling away in the second as they took a 59-42 lead at the half.
Jordan Holness had 19 points (7/7 from the field, 4/4 from 3, 1/1 from the free throw line) in the third giving the ‘Canes an 89-61 lead through three. The Chargers would push in the fourth, reducing the ‘Canes lead by seven.
Holness led all scorers with 32 points in the game while also adding four rebounds and four assists.
Logan Rempel came off the bench with 20 points, three rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
Tyray Cooper also had an excellent game off the bench with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, five steals.
Bryce Corless added a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
The ‘Canes move to 9-0 and hold a slim lead a top the conference standings over the 8-2, STU Tommies. The Chargers fall to 5-5 and are now tied for third in the conference.
The men’s Hurricanes will return to action next Friday when they are on the road to take on the 5-4, Mount Allison University Mounties at 8pm in Sackville, New Brunswick.
