The Holland Hurricanes continued their Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular seasons over the weekend, with the basketball and volleyball ‘Canes completing games on the road in New Brunswick.
Earning wins were the women’s basketball and volleyball teams, while the men’s basketball and volleyball teams struggled in defeat.
Women’s Basketball - Friday, February 25 – Hurricanes 80, Mount Allison University 68
The Hurricanes fell behind 12-2 to start the game but some excellent three-point shooting propelled the ‘Canes to a 23-17 lead through one quarter. An even second quarter saw the ‘Canes lead 45-40 at the half. The Hurricanes would hold the Mounties to nine points in the third to take a 64-49 lead through three, eventually securing the win.
Lisa Bolander had 15 of her team-high 21 points in the first quarter, while also adding four rebounds and four assists.
Karla Benitez and Grace Bennett both had 18 points with Benitez adding eight rebounds and two assists and Bennett recording seven rebounds.
The ‘Canes are now 7-3 on the season and sit in third place. The Mounties are 6-4 and right behind the ‘Canes in fourth. The Hurricanes return to action on Thursday when they host the Mounties again, this time in Charlottetown at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement (MCCE), at 6pm. This is the Hurricanes final regular season home game of the season.

Men’s Basketball - Saturday February 25 – Hurricanes 74, Mount Allison Univeristy 86
The Hurricanes led 23-20 after the first quarter but couldn’t hold on and fell behind 43-42 at the half. The ‘Canes would continue to struggle in the third quarter falling behind 68-63 heading into the fourth which they would lose by seven for the 12-point loss.
Bryce Corless led the way for the ‘Canes with 18 points and 10 rebounds with Jordan Holness adding 16 points and five rebounds while Logan Rempel had 13 points and six rebounds.
Tyray Cooper and Jalen Menzies both had ten points and three steals off the bench in the loss.
The Hurricanes are now 9-1 on the season and are tied with the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies for first in the ACAA; Mount Allison is 7-4 and in third place.
On Thursday the ‘Canes will return to action to face the Mounties at home at 8pm in their final home game of the regular season.

Women’s Volleyball Saturday February 26 – Hurricanes 3, STU 0
With set scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-18, the Hurricanes cruised to the victory on Saturday night in Fredericton.
Sam Gerbig led the attack with nine kills followed closely by Morgan White with eight and both Jenna O’Neill and Kateia Barenaba with seven.
Shayla Reding had a match-high 31 assists while Jenna MacFarlane led the defensive effort with a match-high 13 digs.
White added eight aces which is tied for third most all-time in a match and three digs while Gerbig added seven digs and O’Neill recorded three aces and six digs.
The loss dropped the Tommies to 9-3 and in a tie for third in the ACAA.
Women’s Volleyball - Sunday February 27 – Hurricanes 3, Crandall 0
The action continued Sunday in Moncton for the Hurricanes as they picked up the straight sets win over the Crandall University Chargers; set scores were 27-25, 25-21 and 25-14.
Myah Utrosa, Gerbig, and Barenaba all had six kills with O’Neill adding five and White with four in a balanced attack.
Shayla Reding had 18 assists with Barenaba adding five. MacFarlane, Utrosa, and Gerbig all had four digs while O’Neill and White had three.
With two wins over the weekend, the Hurricanes move to 12-1 on the season and have clinched first place and home-court advantage through the playoffs. Crandall is now 1-12 and tied for eighth.
The ‘Canes return to action on Saturday when the host the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils (3-8) at 2pm at the MCCE in Charlottetown in their final game of the regular season.
The Hurricanes, hosts of the 2022 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship in Charlottetown, March 23-27, were joined by two qualifiers over the weekend from the PACWEST conference (British Columbia). Three of the eight spots in the championship field are now occupied by the Hurricanes, the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners, and Douglas College Royals.

Men’s Volleyball - Saturday February 26 – Hurricanes 1, STU 3
With set scores of 21-25, 25-20, 25-14 and 25-11, the men’s volleyball Hurricanes fell to the STU Tommies on Saturday afternoon in Fredericton.
Luke Hyde (15) and Ben MacDougall (13) combined for 28 of the teams 30 kills in the loss.
Joey Horne had 26 assists while the digs were spread around as five players had between five and eight led by Zach Morris with eight and Hyde with seven.
Men’s Volleyball - Sunday February 27 – Hurricanes 0, STU 3
It was a one-sided affair on Sunday afternoon in Fredericton as the Hurricanes and Tommies completed the back end of a double-header. Set scores were 25-13, 25-18 and 25-16.
Hyde once again led the attack with 12 kills with MacDougall the next closest with five.
Horne had 19 assists while Morris led the defensive effort with six digs and Hyde was close behind with 5.
With two losses, the ‘Canes are now 2-8 on the season and sit in fourth place in the ACAA, while the Tommies remain atop the conference standings at 9-1.
The ‘Canes will take on the third place University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves (4-6) next weekend in Charlottetown. Game times are scheduled for 4pm on Saturday and 12pm on Sunday. Without the chance of hosting home playoff games, these will be the final two home games for the men’s volleyball ‘Canes this season.
