Big matchups ahead for ‘Canes baseball and football

It’s a relatively quiet weekend ahead for the Holland Hurricanes with just six games scheduled across Saturday and Sunday, but those six games are all considered big ones.

The baseball ‘Canes will be busy, hosting a triple-header on Saturday in Charlottetown versus the Saint Mary’s University (SMU) Huskies in a battle for first place in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA) standings. The ‘Canes enter the weekend at 8-3 and in second place, while SMU is half a game up, at 9-4, and in first place.

Game one starts at 11am, with games two and three scheduled to begin at approximately 2pm and 5pm; all three games take place at Memorial Field in Victoria Park.

The Huskies lead the season series with the Hurricanes, defeating them on September 18, 6-5, before game two of that day’s double-header was rained out.  Saturday’s triple head will make up the missed game from September 18th, plus the cancelled double-header from September 24th.

The ‘Canes will conclude their ACBA regular season on the road on Sunday when they visit the St. Francis Xavier (St. FX) X-Men in Antigonish, Nova Scotia; games are scheduled to take place at 1 and 3:30pm.

The X-Men enter the weekend at 5-7 and in fifth in the ACBA standings.

The top four teams from the regular season will qualify and travel to Wolfville, Nova Scotia for the 2022 ACBA Championship on October 21-23, hosted by the Acadia University.

The football Hurricanes will conclude the road portion of their 2022 Atlantic Football League (AFL) regular season when they visit the Dalhousie University Tigers at 1pm in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Saturday.

The Hurricanes enter the weekend at 1-1 and in third place after defeating the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves in week one, followed by a close loss to the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds in week three.

The ‘Canes and Tigers were originally scheduled to meet in week two, but the game was cancelled due to Hurricane Fiona.

The Tigers enter at 2-0 after wins over the Seawolves and Reds and sit in first place.

The Hurricanes will play their home opener on Saturday, October 15 when they host UNBSJ at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall, PEI at 6pm.
