'Canes win and lose in weekend matchups

The men’s and women’s Hurricanes were in action this weekend at the McMillan Centre for back-to-back days of Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season basketball while the women’s volleyball ‘Canes had just one road game to play versus the Mount Allison University Mounties.

 

Women’s Basketball

Saturday | Hurricanes 82, Crandall 57

The Hurricanes hosted the Crandall Chargers on Saturday at the McMillan Centre, taking a 24-11 lead after the first quarter.  They would extend that lead to 50-30 at halftime, and 66-43 after three, before claiming the 25-point victory.

Lauren Armstrong led the way for the ‘Canes with 17 points, nine rebounds, and five assists with Karla Benitez adding 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Danielle McKinnon had 15 points and five threes off the bench with Lisa Bolander adding 14 points, five rebounds, and seven assists in the win.

 

Sunday | Hurricanes 101, UNBSJ 55

On Sunday versus the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves, the ‘Canes trailed 18-17 after one quarter, before exploding to a 50-26 lead at halftime.  They would pull ahead to an 81-35 lead after three and earn the 46-point victory.

Amy Plaggenhoef had 22 points to jointly lead the way on offense for the Hurricanes while also adding six rebounds and five assists. Danielle McKinnon had another excellent game off the bench with 22 points and six threes while Molly Steadman had 16 points, five rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Lauren Armstrong had game-highs in rebounds with 13 and assists with eight in the win.

The ‘Canes move to 4-1 on the season and are part of a group of four teams with one loss atop the standings. The ‘Canes will be on the road next Sunday for a rematch with the Seawolves (0-4) in Saint John, New Brunswick. 

The ‘Canes next home game takes place on December 3 when they host the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics (3-1) at the McMillan Centre.

Men’s Basketball

Saturday | Hurricanes 85, Crandall 79

The Hurricanes put their perfect record on the line on Saturday evening in a tough matchup with the Crandall University Chargers.  The ‘Canes trailed 22-16 after the first, and 44-34 at the half, but mounted a comeback in the second half, pulling ahead 70-65 after three.  They would hold on for the six-point victory.

Jalen Menzies had a team-high 18 points to go along with three rebounds, five assists and six steals for the Hurricanes. Jack MacAulay and Logan Rempel both had 16 points with MacAulay adding four rebounds, two assists, and two steals while Rempel added five rebounds and two steals. Almin Dervisivic recorded a ten-point, 13 rebound double-double in the win.

 

Sunday | Hurricanes 115, UNBSJ 82

On Sunday afternoon the Hurricanes welcomed the UNBSJ Seawolves to the McMillan Centre for an ACAA regular season matchup.  The Hurricanes led 27-16 after the first, 55-37 at the half, and 84-59 after three en route to a 33-point win.

Jack MacAulay had 26 of his game-high 31 points in the first half for the ‘Canes, adding six rebounds and four assists. Kyree Thompson added 22 points, three rebounds, two assists, and three steals off the bench. Almin Dervisivic had 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists while Logan Rempel recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

The ‘Canes are off to a 5-0 start on the season and sit atop the ACAA standings alongside the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies. The ‘Canes return to action next Sunday against UNBSJ (0-4), this time on the road.

The Hurricanes next home game takes place on Saturday, December 3 when they host the MSVU Mystics (2-2) at 4pm.

Women’s Volleyball

Saturday | Hurricanes 0, Mount Allison 3 - Set scores were 20-25, 15-25, 23-25.

The Hurricanes took on the Mount Allison University Mounties on Saturday afternoon in New Brunswick in a battle for first place in the ACAA standings.  The Mounties went on to take the first two sets in convincing fashion, before edging out the ‘Canes in the third for the straight-sets win.

Morgan White had five kills to lead the attack for the Hurricanes with Myah Utrosa and Makena Marble both adding four. White added three aces and three digs in the loss. Ella Hickey had 16 assists while Sam Richardson led the defense with eight digs and Charlotte Sweetapple had a team-high five aces.

It’s the second loss in a row for the Hurricanes, who fall to 3-2 on the season and in a tie for third. The Hurricanes will look to get back on track when they host the Crandall University Chargers (1-4) this Sunday at the McMillan Centre at 2pm.
