The Holland Hurricanes kicked off the 2021 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) cross country running season at the Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park on Saturday with six schools competing in the men’s and women’s team and individual competitions.
In total there were over 50 runners competing in the meet.
Emily Swaine was the top Hurricanes women’s runner, finishing fifth in the field of 25. She recorded a time of 30:20 on the six-kilometer course. The second Hurricanes runner, Olivia Fogarty, went on to finish 14th with a time of 35:00.
Finishing at the top of the standings in the women’s individual run was Teagan Stewart (26:42), Caitlin MacPherson (27:54) and Maggie Kerr (28:57) from the Mount Allison Mounties. Mary MacLean finished in fourth at 29:25, from the Crandall University Chargers.
In the team competition, the Mounties took the victory.
On the men’s side, the Hurricanes finished third in the team competition with the Mounties earning the win and the Chargers finishing second.
Individually, Jeffrin Benedict led the ‘Canes with a time of 37:53 in ninth out of 38 runners. Also competing for the Hurricanes was Abdallah Al Aydy (10th, 37:59), Willian Wang (14th, 41:24), Seth Doyle (19th, 46:37) and Zachary Ryan (20th, 48:02); Josiah Wigmore withdrew during the race due to injury.
Sean Finnigan (Crandall) won the race in 32:03 followed by Jack MacMillan (32:41) and Isaac McCardle (33:20) from the Mount Allison Mounties. Rounding out the top-five was Raj Zimmerman from the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (34:47) and Jacob MacPhee from the Mounties (34:47).
The Hurricanes next meet takes place on Saturday, October 2 in Church Point, Nova Scotia, hosted by the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons.
