The Holland Hurricanes are set to host the first meet of the 2021 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) schedule this Saturday at the Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park/Nordic site in Brookvale.
The meet will consist of the women’s race at 11am on the six-kilometer course, with the men’s race beginning at 12pm on the eight-kilometer course.
The event will feature approximately 55 student-athletes from Mount Allison University, Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU), Université de Sainte-Anne, Crandall University, Dalhousie Agricultural Campus and Holland College.
The Hurricanes will be represented by Abdallah Al Aydy, Jeffrin Benedict, Seth Doyle, Zachary Ryan, William Wang and Josiah Wigmore on the men’s side, with Olivia Fogarty and Emily Swaine on the women’s side.
“I’m looking to have a good race on Saturday,” shared Josiah Wigmore. “It would be nice to finish among the top guys, but at the end of the day it’s all about improvement, so if I can improve on my time from last year that’s a win my in book. The Brookvale course is no walk in the park. There are a couple of tough hills that we run but overall it’s a great course and I always enjoy running it.”
Emily Swaine shares the excitement the rest of her teammates feel heading into the first meet of the season.
“For the first race I am just hoping to set the tone for the rest of the season. I’m looking to improve throughout the season and want to start with a strong race under my belt. The Brookvale course has felt good so far this season. The hills are always a challenge but we’ve been training them so it will be nice to have a home team advantage since we know what to expect. We’re looking forward to a great race this weekend.”
