The Holland Hurricanes women’s volleyball team returns to action on Saturday to begin the 2021-22 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season. First-serve is scheduled for 4pm in Halifax versus the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils. Play continues on Sunday when the ‘Canes visit the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics at 12pm.
This is the first intercollegiate action for the ‘Canes since March 2020, when the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship was cancelled mid-tournament due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
The ‘Canes return to the court after winning their first ever conference title in 2020. The 2020-21 ACAA schedule was cancelled due to the pandemic.
First-year head coach, Hayden Nichol, is excited to return to intercollegiate competition after a season away from the gym.
“The team had a strong showing at our tip-off tournament a couple of weeks ago and we are currently playing a level of volleyball I am comfortable with at this point in the season. Our student-athletes are excited to be playing meaningful conference matches again and are looking forward to facing two challenging opponents this weekend in Halifax.”
Nichol will also lead the Hurricanes men’s volleyball team, who get their regular season started next Saturday, November 6 when they host the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies at 6pm.
The women’s Hurricanes, starting the season with three straight road games, will host their home opener on Sunday, November 7 versus the Tommies at 2pm at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement on the Holland College Prince of Wales Campus in Charlottetown.
