Volleyball Hurricanes see mixed results against Tommies

The Holland Hurricanes women’s volleyball team picked up a straight-sets win over the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies on Sunday, while the men’s team fell in four sets on both Saturday and Sunday at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season action.

In the men’s game on Saturday, the ‘Canes lost by set scores of 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16.

Simon Archibald and Luke Hyde both had 11 kills to lead the attack for Holland College with Ben MacDougall adding seven.  Brandon Hastings and Joey Horne split setting duties, recording 19 and ten assists respectively. Marcus Lapointe had ten digs with Archibald adding eight and MacDougall six in the loss.

In the men’s game on Sunday, the ‘Canes lost by set scores of 25-23, 25-13, 25-27, 25-20.

Archibald led the attack with 19 kills with Hyde adding ten and MacDougall eight.  Hastings dished out 31 assists while Lapointe led the defense with 12 digs. Hyde added three aces and seven digs with MacDougall chipping in with two aces and seven digs.

The ‘Canes are 0-2 to start the season and are tied with the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves. The Tommies now sit at 3-0 and lead the conference standings.

The men return to the court next weekend when the travel to Nova Scotia to take on the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons with first serve set for 4pm on Saturday, November 13 and noon on Sunday, November 14.

In the women’s game on Sunday, the ‘Canes won by set scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-16.

Ava Beisal led a balanced offensive effort with nine kills with Jenna O’Neill and Sam Gerbig right behind with eight each and Kateia Barenaba adding five.  Shayla Reding dished out a match-high 26 assists to go along with four aces in the win.  O’Neill, Beisal, and Gerbig joined Reding in leading the team with four aces with Barenaba adding three.  Jenna MacFarlane led the defensive effort with 16 digs with O’Neill adding eight and Gerbig five.

The ‘Canes move to 4-0 on the season and lead the ACAA standings while the Tommies fall to 2-1 and sit in a tie for third.

The ‘Canes return to action on Friday, November 12 when they host the Crandall University Chargers at 7pm before travelling take on the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons on Saturday with first serve set for 6pm.
