Hurricanes volleyball is set to play at the Holland College McMillan Centre for Community Engagement for the first time in 623 days this Saturday, when the men host the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies at 6pm in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season action.
The weekend marks a celebration of volleyball at Holland College, also featuring matches on Sunday. At 12pm, the men are back in action versus the Tommies, while at 2pm the women’s Hurricanes play their home-opener versus the STU.
The women’s Hurricanes, the 2019-20 ACAA champions, enter the weekend at 3-0 after beginning their season with road victories over the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils, Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics and Mount Allison University Mounties.
“After almost two years of no competition, it’s been a roller coaster of emotions getting back to playing games,” shared Hurricanes outside, Samantha Gerbig. “We are anxious in the best way possible to get back to playing on our own court and bringing ACAA volleyball back to the Island for the first times since February 2020.”
On Wednesday in Sackville, New Brunswick versus the Mounties, the ‘Canes earned the win in four sets by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 13-25, 25-21. The Mounties fell to 1-1 with the loss.
The women’s Hurricanes opponents at home on Sunday, the STU Tommies, are currently 2-0, after wins over the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves and Crandall University Chargers.
The women’s Hurricanes are the hosts of the 2022 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Women’s Volleyball Championship this March.
The men’s Hurricanes, playing their season opener, are set to host the 1-0, Tommies.
“The men’s team is excited to finally get their regular season underway,” shared head coach of the men’s and women’s volleyball Hurricanes, Hayden Nichol. “Taking on a very talented STU team this early in the season will be a great test for us. We are happy to play in front of Hurricanes fans once again.”
