


The Holland Hurricanes returned to the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall this weekend for Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season action for the first time since 2019. The ‘Canes welcomed the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils on Saturday, with the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics in town on Sunday.
The women’s Hurricanes entered the weekend at 2-0-0 and atop the ACAA standings.
On Saturday versus UKC, the Blue Devils got on the board first, when Sophie Shepherd found the back of the net in the 10’.
Trailing entering the second half, Emily Cormier pulled the ‘Canes even with her second of the season in the 59’; the game would end in a 1-1 draw.
Kylie MacLellan made her ‘Canes debut in goal while Rebecca Florean was in nets for the Blue Devils. The ‘Canes edged out the Blue Devils in shots, 9-6.
The Blue Devils ended the weekend at 1-0-2 after a win on Sunday versus the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams.
On Sunday versus the MSVU Mystics, the visiting team once again was the first to score, when former Hurricane, Kathrine McEwen, got behind the Holland College defenders to put the Mystics on the board in the 21’.
The Mystics lead was short-lived as Emily Lepine replied for the Hurricanes in the 26’ to even the game at 1-1. This is how things would stand entering the half.
The momentum continued for the Hurricanes in the second half, when Emily Cormier scored her second of the weekend in the 68’ to give the ‘Canes the 2-1 lead.
With time ticking away, the Mystics pulled out all the stops, first in the 76’ when Kaitlyn Oakey tied the game at 2-2, followed by an MSVU goal in the 82’ by Pascale Haidar, giving them the 3-2 lead and eventual victory.
MacLellan was in goal once again for the ‘Canes while Morgan Gillis was the goalkeeper for the Mystics. The Mystics outshot the ‘Canes in the match, 13-7.
The Mystics improve to 2-0-1 with Sunday’s victory, sitting in second place in the standings alongside the 2-1-1 Hurricanes.
The men’s Hurricanes entered their home opener on Saturday at 1-0-1 after their opening weekend in New Brunswick.
Saturday’s game versus UKC featured a defensive first-half that saw both teams head to their locker rooms at the break in a scoreless tie.
Late in the game, Gustavo Guerrero would put the Hurricanes in the lead in the 83’ when he found the bottom corner; it was his first of the season.
The ‘Canes would hold on for the 1-0 win, outshooting the Blue Devils, 11-8. Keegan MacKinnon earned the win in goal for the Hurricanes while Parker Ingham was the goalkeeper for UKC. Kian Bowie was handed the only yellow-card in the match for UKC.
The Blue Devils completed the weekend at 2-1-0 after a victory on Sunday versus the Dal AC Rams.
On Sunday in Cornwall, the Hurricanes prepared to take on the MSVU Mystics in what was sure to be an intense matchup.
The Hurricanes struck first when Kazuya Iwasaki scored in the 14’ off a corner-kick, followed by another in the 26’ off a free kick to the top left corner, giving the Hurricanes the early 2-0 lead.
Luc Adriopoulous would make things interesting when he scored for the Mystics in the 34’, cutting the ‘Canes lead to 2-1, but Parker MacLeod would add an insurance goal for the Hurricanes in the 42’, giving his team the 3-1 lead heading into the half.
In a physical second half, full of yellow and red cards, neither team was able to find the back of the net as the Hurricanes earned the 3-1 victory.
MacKinnon was back in goal for the Hurricanes while Kevin Abraham was the goalkeeper for the Mystics. The ‘Canes outshot the Mystics in the match, 13-10.
In total, eight yellow cards were issued to the Mystics on Sunday, including red cards to Noah Jordan and Jesse Beaton. The ‘Canes were issued two yellow cards in the match.
With the loss, the Mystics fell to 2-1-0 on the season, sitting in third place in the standings, while the 3-0-1 Hurricanes now lead the conference with ten points; the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies sit in second at 2-0-1.
The Hurricanes have a short week ahead of them as they return to the field on Thursday night at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall to face the Crandall University Chargers. The Chargers women enter the game at 0-1-3 while the men are 0-3. Things get started on Thursday with the women’s game at 6pm followed by the men at 8:15pm.
