


It was an exciting weekend at Memorial Field at Victoria Park for fans of the Hurricanes as they picked up four wins over the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds and St. Mary’s University (SMU) Huskies in Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA) regular season play.
Four wins for the Hurricanes improve their record to 7-1 as they lead the ACBA standings at the midway point of the regular season.
The ‘Canes will now visit the second place, UNB Reds on Saturday in Fredericton, New Brunswick before returning home to host the Dalhousie Tigers on Sunday at Memorial Field at Victoria Park; games take place at 1 and 3:30pm each day.
September 18, Game 1 – Hurricanes 6, UNB 4
The Hurricanes erased a 3-0 UNB lead late in the game in a 6-4 victory on Saturday in game one. The ‘Canes scored four in the fifth, and two in the sixth to set themselves up for the win. UNB attempted the comeback in the seventh, but were only able to score a single run.
Cody LeBlanc earned the win for the Hurricanes. The pitcher surrendered two runs on zero hits over three and two-thirds innings, striking out four. Allan Saunders threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen to earn the save for Holland College.
Rylan Matchett took the loss for UNB, allowing six hits and four runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out six.
Ronny De La Cruz started the game for Holland College, going three innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out three.
The ‘Canes recorded six hits in the game with Grady and Jack MacKenzie each racking up two.
September 18, Game 2 – Hurricanes 8, UNB 1
The Hurricanes earned the convincing 8-1 victory over UNB in game two on Saturday.
UNB got things started in the second inning when Matthew Munn grounded out, scoring one run.
The Hurricanes pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning when Dylan Worth singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run and Ben MacDougall grounded out, scoring two runs. The ‘Canes then added a single run in the fourth.
In the sixth inning, Holland College would score four runs, the rally was led by Garret Hebert and Rhyan Storr, each contributing with base-hits.
Jack MacKenzie was the winning pitcher for the ‘Canes, allowing five hits and one run over seven innings and striking out seven.
Nick St. Pierre took the loss for UNB, surrendering four runs on four hits over four innings, striking out three.
In total, the ‘Canes had eight hits in the win.
September 19, Game 1 – Hurricanes 5, SMU 4
It came down to the wire in game one on Sunday, with Holland College taking the victory on a dramatic walk-off single in the seventh inning. The game was tied at four with Holland College batting in the bottom of the seventh when Ryan May singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.
SMU would take the 4-2 lead when they scored four runs in the fifth, led by Oscar Kozariz, Logan Raftus, and Shayne Doyle, all driving in runs in the frame.
The Hurricanes originally took the lead when they scored two in the first inning, but SMU bounced back with four runs scored in the fifth.
Isaac Compton got the win for Holland College on the mound, going two and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on two hits, striking out two and walking one.
Brock Townsend took the loss for SMU, surrendering five runs on eight hits over six and a third innings, striking out three.
Eric Anderson was the starting pitcher in the game for the Hurricanes, lasting four and a third innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out six.
Jack MacKenzie went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Holland College in hits in the win.
September 19, Game 2 – Hurricanes 9, SMU 6
The Hurricanes used another late-game comeback to secure the win on Sunday in game two versus the Huskies when Dylan Worth’s sac-fly in the bottom of the sixth scored the go-ahead run. In total the ‘Canes scored six runs in the inning to erase the 6-3 deficit.
Both offenses were strong at the plate in the game as Holland College collected seven hits and SMU recorded nine in the high-scoring affair.
The Huskies opened up scoring in the first inning, when an error scored two runs. The ‘Canes bounced back with singles in the second and third to tie the game at 2-2.
The Huskies would then score three runs in the fourth inning to open up a 5-2 lead. Shayne Doyle and Larry Barton all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.
Single runs for each team in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth put the Huskies ahead 6-3 heading to the bottom of the sixth. The ‘Canes would attack the Huskies bullpen, scoring six runs in the inning, setting them up for the 9-6 win.
Brayden Lebel earned the win for Holland College on the mound, allowing two hits and zero runs over two innings, walking zero.
Kyle Sampson took the loss for SMU, allowing six hits and seven runs over five and two-thirds innings, striking out one.
Ben MacDougall was the starting pitcher in the game for Holland College, pitching five innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking zero.
The Hurricanes totaled seven hits in the game with Brady Storey and Rhyan Storr both managing two hits for Holland College.
SMU tallied nine total hits in the loss, while stealing five bases during the game.
