Baseball ‘Canes go 3-1 on the road

The Holland Hurricanes baseball team split games against the Acadia University Axemen on Saturday before using a pair of late game rallies to sweep the St. Francix Xavier (St.FX) X-Men on Sunday as they continued their Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA) regular season on the road in Nova Scotia.

 

October 2, Game 1- Acadia 9, Hurricanes 0

The Hurricanes began their weekend in Nova Scotia by being shut down by the Axemen’s starter, Matt Bradley, who went the distance allowing just two hits while walking four and striking out eight.

Cody LeBlanc took the loss for the ‘Canes going five innings, allowing seven runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Ben MacDougall and Ethan McLellan each had a hit for the ‘Canes.

 

October 2, Game 2- Hurricanes 8, Acadia 3

The Hurricanes entered the sixth inning down 2-1 but would score six runs, five with two outs, thanks in large part to a three-run double by Dylan Worth.

Eric Anderson picked up the win for the ‘Canes, allowing four hits and three runs over six and one-third innings with five walks and three strikeouts.

Jacobie Ford took the loss for Acadia, giving up five hits and four runs over five and one-third innings.

The ‘Canes totalled eight hits with five batters recording one and Rhyan Storr with two.

 

October 3, Game 1- Hurricanes 10, St. FX 3

On Sunday in Antigonish, the Hurricanes and X-Men were tied 2-2 after four before the ‘Canes pushed one across in the fifth and busting it open with four in the sixth and three in the seventh to take the victory.

Ben MacDougall went the distance for the ‘Canes giving up three hits, three runs, and three walks while striking out eight.

Dominick Tremblay took the loss for St.FX, allowing five hits, seven runs, and four walks with three strikeouts in five and two-third innings.

Jack MacKenzie, Dylan Worth, Drew Grady, and Ethan McLellan each had two hits as the ‘Canes recorded eight in the game.

The ‘Canes also recorded eight stolen bases in the game led by Ben MacDougall and Matt Peacock with two each.

 

October 3, Game 2- Hurricanes 15, St. FX 5

The Hurricanes put up four in the fourth to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead. then added two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and six in the seventh to blow it open.

Jack MacKenzie took the win with five innings of relief giving up two runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Johnathan Tremblay took the loss going three and one-third innings with five hits, five runs, four walks, and four strikeouts.

The ‘Canes pounded out 16 hits led by Ben MacDougall and Brett Caissie with three each.

The ‘Canes stole nine bases in the game led by Ben MacDougall with four and Garret Hebert with two.

 

The ‘Canes move to 10-2 on the season and continue to lead the standings, one-game up on the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds (9-3). Acadia is now 9-5, two games back of the ‘Canes, while St.FX is in fourth at 6-8, and five games back of the Hurricanes.

The ‘Canes will conclude their 2021 regular season this weekend when they host Dalhousie on Saturday, October 9 in Summerside, before travelling to Fredericton, New Brunswick on Sunday to take on UNB in a pivotal game in the standings prior to the ACBA Championship.

The Hurricanes are hosting the 2021 ACBA Championship at Memorial Field at Victoria Park in Charlottetown.  The top-four teams from the regular season will compete for the Atlantic Championship on October 15-17.
