The Holland Hurricanes completed a busy stretch of action this weekend with the basketball, volleyball and hockey ‘Canes all competing. Here is a full summary of all nine games.
Women’s Basketball

The Hurricanes returned home this weekend and performed well in front of their home fans. On Saturday the Hurricanes picked up a win of 76-60 over the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies and 84-64 over the University of New Brunswick (UNBSJ) Seawolves.
On Saturday the ‘Canes got off to a strong start and led 18-10 after one quarter but a poor second quarter saw their lead shrink to 30-29 at the half. The ‘Canes would come out strong to start the second half and almost double their points, taking a 56-48 lead into the fourth. The ‘Canes would continue their strong play in the fourth and took the game 76-60.
Grace Bennett had a monstrous offensive game scoring 32 points while adding eight rebounds, two assists, and a block.
Lisa Bolander added 15 points, six rebounds, six assists with Ashley Plaggenhoef recording eight points, seven rebounds, five assists, four steals, and two blocks.
Karla Benitez had an impressive six steals to go along with seven points, six rebounds, and three assists.
On Sunday, the ‘Canes and Seawolves went back and forth in the first quarter with the ‘Canes leading 21-19 but an excellent second quarter gave the ‘Canes a 46-28 lead at the break. The second half was fairly even with the ‘Canes winning by two points over the 20 minutes for the 84-64 win.
Bolander had a team-high 18 points to lead the offense.
Benitez added 12 points, three rebounds, five assists, and three steals while Kassie Little recorded a double-double off the bench with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The ‘Canes move to 4-1 on the season and are in third place with STU falling to 5-1 and in second. The Seawolves are now 0-6 and sit in seventh place.
Next weekend in Halifax, the ‘Canes will challenge the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics on Saturday and University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils on Sunday; tip-off is 2pm each day.

Men’s Basketball

On Saturday, the ‘Canes fell behind the STU Tommies early and trailed 25-18 after the first quarter. They would chip away at the deficit and trailed 44-41 at the half. A pair of 31-point quarters in the second half while giving up 46 points in the final 20 minutes gave the ‘Canes a 103-90 win.
Jordan Holness led all scorers with 21 points while adding six rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Bryce Corless added 19 points, nine rebounds, and three steals with Jashajaun Downey also recording 19 points.
Logan Rempel and Jalen Menzies provided a scoring punch off the bench with 15 and 13 points respectively.
On Sunday, the ‘Canes came out strong versus the UNBSJ Seawolves and led 21-10 after one. The ‘Canes would continue to build on the lead going up 45-27 at the half and 74-48 after three. The Seawolves would close the game in the fourth as the ‘Canes came away with the 93-73 win.
Downey led the balanced offense with 23 points with Rempel right behind with 21 points along with eight rebounds.
Holness added 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists with Tyray Cooper chipping in with 12 points and Menzies adding 11 points, four assists, and two steals.
Corless recorded seven points, seven rebounds, five assists, and five steals in the win.
The ‘Canes are off to a 5-0 start to the season and sit atop the ACAA standings while the Tommies are now 4-2 and tied for second and the Seawolves sit in seventh at 0-6.
The ‘Canes return to action next weekend when they travel to Halifax to take on MSVU Mystics (2-5) on Saturday and UKC (3-2) on Sunday; both games begin at 4pm.

Women’s Volleyball
The Hurricanes returned home to the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement (MCCE) this weekend to host the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams. The ‘Canes outlasted the Rams with a five-set victory by set scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 24-26, and 15-9.
Ava Beisal led the attack with 12 kills, just ahead of Sam Gerbig who had 11 kills and Jenna O’Neill who added ten.
Shayla Reding dished out 43 assists and added ten digs for the ‘Canes.
Jenna MacFarlane led the defensive effort with 22 digs with O’Neill adding 17 and Beisal 12.
Gerbig added six aces and 14 digs while Kateia Barenaba added five aces and eight digs in the win.
The ‘Canes are now 7-0 to start the season and lead the conference while the Rams are 3-4 and tied for fifth.
These two teams will match up again next weekend, this time in Truro, Nova Scotia on Saturday at 2pm. The women’s volleyball Hurricanes next home game takes place on Saturday, December 4 versus the Université de Sainte-Anne (USTA) Dragons at 5pm.

Men’s Volleyball

The ‘Canes were in Saint John, New Brunswick over the weekend to challenge the UNBSJ Seawolves in two ACAA regular season matches. The two-teams split the weekend with one win each.
On Saturday, the ‘Canes fell by set scores of 25-22, 25-18, 25-15 in straight sets.
Luke Hyde and Ben MacDougall led the attack with 11 and ten kills respectively.
Brandon Hastings dished out 17 assists with five other players combining for nine.
Hyde led the defensive effort with nine digs with Marcus Lapointe adding five and Nathan Baker four.
In Sunday’s five-set thriller, the ‘Canes won by set scores of 25-23, 27-29, 18-25, 25-20, 15-12.
Hyde led the attack again with 20 kills while also adding 16 digs. MacDougall also had a great game with 11 kills, three assists, three aces, and a team-high 22 digs.
Lapointe added 17 digs while Joey Horne had 35 assists and five digs in the win.
The ‘Canes are now 2-4 on the season and in third place in the ACAA standings, just ahead of the Seawolves who are 1-5.
The ‘Canes are back in action again on Saturday, December 4th when they host the USTA Dragons at the MCCE at 7pm.

Women’s Hockey

The Hurricanes began their 2021-22 Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) regular season on Saturday in Sydney, Nova Scotia versus the Cape Breton University (CBU) Capers.
On Saturday, goals from Elizabeth Lirette, Paige Deighan, Allie Christensen, Claire Renken and Meaghan Taylor powered the ‘Canes to a 5-2 victory to open the season. Assists went to Emma Stuart, Maddy Clapham, Lirette, and Hannah DesRoches (2). Emma Arsenault earned the win in goal for the ‘Canes.
Back at it on Sunday morning, the Capers used two first-period goals to give themselves the lead, before Maddy Clapham (from Hannah DesRoches) cut the lead to one. A Paige Deighan goal (assist to Clapham and Lirette) midway through the third would tie the game, before the Capers found the back of the net in the final minutes to earn their first win of the season by a score of 3-2. Avery Bradley was the starting goalie for the Hurricanes.
The ‘Canes begin the season at 1-1 and trail the Acadia Axewomen in the standings who are 2-0. CBU now sits at 1-3.
The ‘Canes next regular season games are their home openers taking place on Saturday, December 4 (7pm) and Sunday, December 5 (11:15am) at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown versus Acadia.
