Women’s Volleyball
For the first time in 28 regular season games, dating back to February of 2019, the Holland Hurricanes women’s volleyball team suffered a defeat, dropping a five-set match to the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams in Truro on Saturday.
Set scores were 25-20, 25-10, 18-25, 15-25 and 15-11.
Ava Beisal led the way for the ‘Canes, recording 12 kills, seven aces, and 14 digs.
Sam Gerbig recorded 11 kills, 14 digs, and two aces with Jenna MacFarlane adding 14 digs; Shayla Reding recorded 28 assists and four aces in the loss.
The Hurricanes are now 7-1 on the season and are tied for first with the Mount Allison University Mounties. The Rams improve to 5-4 and are tied for fourth in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) play.
The ‘Canes are back in action next Saturday, December 4 when they host the Université de Sainte-Anne (USTA) Dragons in a busy day of court sports at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown; first serve set for 6pm with the men’s volleyball game versus the Dragons to follow at 8pm.

Women’s Basketball

The Holland Hurricanes were in Halifax, Nova Scotia this weekend for back-to-back days of ACAA basketball. The ‘Canes faced the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics on Saturday, before challenging the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils on Sunday.
In the women’s game on Saturday versus MSVU, the ‘Canes fell behind to the Mystics 23-18 after one, and an even second quarter meant the ‘Canes trailed 36-31 at the half.
The ‘Canes would have an excellent third quarter and took a 49-45 lead into the fourth, building up a 69-63 lead with a minute left before allowing nine straight points to lose, 72-69.
Sheleese Hoilette led the way for the ‘Canes offensively with 15 points while adding seven rebounds, two assists, and four steals.
Lisa Bolander recorded 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists with Grace Bennett adding 13 points and five rebounds and Karla Benitez recording 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the loss.
On Sunday versus UKC, the ‘Canes jumped out to a 27-14 lead after a strong first quarter but would see their lead slowly shrink to 45-35 at the half and 72-67 after three.
The ‘Canes would find themselves behind 87-85 with just over two minutes remaining before ending the game on an 11-0 run for the 96-87 win.
Bolander recorded an impressive 20-point, 15 rebound double-double with Bennett leading the team in scoring with 27 points along with seven rebounds.
Hoilette added 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the win with Kassie Little chipping in with six points and seven rebounds off the bench.
The Hurricanes are now 5-2 on the season and tied with the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies for second in the conference. MSVU leads the way at 7-1 while UKC sits in fifth at 3-4.

Men’s Basketball

In the men’s game against the MSVU Mystics on Saturday, the ‘Canes took a 21-16 lead after one quarter but would trail 45-43 at the half. The ‘Canes would fall further behind in the third, trailing 68-60 with a quarter to play. An excellent fourth quarter saw the ‘Canes storm back to win 85-81.
Jashajaun Downey led all scorers with 21 points while adding five rebounds and two steals.
Jordan Holness had 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and four steals in the win.
Jalen Menzies and Tyray Cooper provided a scoring punch off the bench with 13 and 12 points respectively.
On Sunday against the UKC Blue Devils, the ‘Canes started strong and led 21-14 after one and 42-30 at the half. The ‘Canes would continue to build on their lead and were up 64-45 after three.
The ‘Canes would lead by as much as 20 in the fourth quarter before a late UKC run closed the gap as the Hurricanes won 84-73.
Downey once again led the team in scoring with 20 points with Bryce Corless providing a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Menzies added 19 points off the bench with Logan Rempel adding seven points and six rebounds.
The ‘Canes are off to a 7-0 start on the season and lead the ACAA. MSVU is 2-6 and in sixth place while UKC is 3-4 and tied for third.
