‘Canes look to end 2021 with victories on busy weekend

It will be a busy day in Charlottetown for the Holland Hurricanes this weekend with six regular season games scheduled on Saturday and Sunday.

Much of the action takes place on Saturday, starting at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement (MCCE) at 1pm when the women’s basketball ‘Canes host the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils.

The ‘Canes enter the weekend at 5-2 and in a tie for second in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) standings alongside the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies.  The Blue Devils enter at 3-4 and in fifth place.  This season the ‘Canes and Blue Devils have met once already, ending in a 96-87 win for the Hurricanes in Halifax last Sunday.

The action continues at 3pm when the men’s basketball Hurricanes take the floor to take on UKC.

The Hurricanes are the only remaining undefeated team in the ACAA, sitting at 7-0, while UKC enters at 3-4 and in a tie for fourth with the Mount Allison University Mounties.  Last Sunday the Hurricanes earned their seventh straight win of the season in Halifax by a score of 84-73 over UKC.

Next up is the women’s volleyball Hurricanes hosting the Université de Sainte-Anne (USTA) Dragons at 6pm.

The Hurricanes are coming off their first loss in 28 regular season matches last Saturday versus the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams in five-sets in Truro.  They’ll look to get back on track on Saturday versus the 1-7, eighth place, Dragons.  The Hurricanes are 7-1 and in a tie for first alongside the Mount Allison University Mounties.

The ‘Canes defeated the Dragons in Church Point, Nova Scotia on November 13 in four-sets in their previous meeting.

Next up is the home opener for the women’s hockey Hurricanes as they host the Acadia University Axewomen on Saturday at 7pm at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown.

The Hurricanes enter the weekend at 1-1-0 and in second place in the Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) standings, while Acadia enters at 2-0-0 and in first.  The Cape Breton University (CBU) Capers were the opponents for both teams in their opening weekends, with this being the first time these two teams have met in 2021-22.

The Hurricanes and Axewomen will meet again on Sunday at 11:15am, also at the Eastlink Centre.

Fans that attend the games this weekend will receive free admission by wearing their Hockey PEI minor hockey jerseys to the Eastlink Centre.

Finally, the men’s volleyball ‘Canes will end a busy Saturday of action at the MCCE when they host the USTA Dragons at 8pm.

The ‘Canes enter at 2-4 and in third place while the Dragons are in second at 3-3.  In two meetings this season, the ‘Canes and Dragons have split the season series.  First, the ‘Canes won on November 13 in five-sets, before dropping the rematch on November 14 when the Dragons won in four-sets.
